I like cordless.
Perfect cut every time and have never messed it up with the Skull Shaver.
Use Duke Cannon Supply Co. After Shave Balm.

Wahl corded MC trimmer with #1.5 comb plus a Wahl #9879 beard trimmer.

Wahl corded with a 1/16th" guard. Use my DE razor for my neck.

A corded Wahl clipper when I buzzed my head. Sadly, I now leave it up to the Dollar Shave Club.

Norelco triple head rotary. Smooth as butter.

Wahl Magiclip. Been cutting my own for maybe 24 years. #1 on the sides faded to the top.

Don't have an issue with dry scalp and don't use any special shampoos or conditioners.

Andis corded. #7 blade. Works great. Leaves just enough that I don't look like Uncle Fester.

When I was doing it myself, I was using my Andis followed up with a DE razor and Nivea aftershave balm. Worked great. I don't recommend Nair for Men. When you do it right, absolutely nothing works better. When you do it wrong, you look like you used lighter fluid... and lit it. Also makes the hair thinner and wispier, so it has to be something you're absolutely sure you're going to commit to and work on getting your technique right before using it. When I finally stopped using it and let my hair grow back, I looked like I had doll hair for a few months.


As for the Andis, I had a Wahl that I wore out. It kept getting louder and louder and was pulling hair instead of cutting it. Come to find out you're supposed to oil them things! Who knew? I oil the Andis.

We have two trimmers in my house: a corded Andis with a couple different blades, and a Walmart special from about the year 2000 with the original blade. We use the Andis on the dog because he doesn’t tolerate a little pulling very well. I use the 20-year-old shitbox on my head because it still runs and I don’t want to ‘waste’ the good one!

Keep in mind, I don’t style with it, I just run the blade with no guard over my head to get a close and reasonably even buzz. If I wanted to do more than just remove hair in bulk, I’d probably use the nice one.

Another note: we tried getting a ceramic blade for the Andis since they are supposed to stay sharp longer. It does, but it heats up the non-ceramic parts of the blade assembly much faster. We can run it for too long in one go or risk it getting uncomfortably hot. Ok for a person head, not so great for a big-ass dog.

I don’t have problems on my head with skin irritation or ingrown hairs. However, I do have those problems on my neck, and I use a Nivea shave balm for that area. It’s basically a fairly watery skin lotion, but it works for my problem areas. YMMV.

I have a nice Braun beard trimmer with different, adjustable guards. I cut in a mohawk, use the guards on the trimmer to keep it the length I want, and shave the rest of my head smooth as a dolphin with a razor. Gillette Fusion razor, and though I know there are better shaving creams, I find old school Barbasol works great.

I bought a cordless Philips-Norelco from Target last year, for around $70.

Lithium battery makes it work a ton better than the older one it replaced (probably had Ni-Cads).

Works great, rarely have to charge it...shave my head once a week.

I bought the cheap Titanium hair clipper, cordless, with all the combs. Use the smallest comb and go after it. Reading the reviews online and threads like these, I'm the only guy in 500 miles who can make it work.

All you do is comb your hair. Repeatedly, for sure, but it will work. Slow is better. It needs one more comb smaller and I'm about ready to chop one down to get that length.

I have the only barber in 500 miles who is closed on Saturday. When the need for a cut and his weekend off coincide, out comes the clippers.

Looks like Wahl and Andis are popular, I'll likely go with one of those this week.

I don't know how you guys manage to go weeks without cutting your hair, my hair grows pretty fast and if I go as much as 10 days without cutting, it's uncomfortable to me. I've been cutting my own hair for the past 12 years, just a simple buzz with no guard. Lately been cutting it every Sunday to stay cool. I've saved myself a lot of money over the past 12 years cutting it myself once a week.

Thank you for this information. I buzz it down with an open blade on the electric clippers. I would usually just run some water through my hair to clean it off real quick but wasn't getting my scalp ready to cut that low.

I was definitely violated #3 because I'd just use lotion on my head.

I've been doing mine for over 30 years. I use hair shears. I get a real haircut every now and then just to fix my mistakes, but I can do it well enough to not need it. A friend of mine cuts hair and didn't believe I had done it myself once. I'm going to get a real haircut this week, she does a great job in 15 minutes and is so good she doesn't need to even check her work, all for $19 plus tip.

WAHL deluxe all in one haircut kit bought at Costco around 2015. Cost about what I was paying for one haircut. She moved to Hawaii and I am now seven years into doing my own.

 
Not much to cut, but the sides do grow out. I've used a Wahl KM-1 for decades (now sold as the KM-2, I think.) It is corded, very powerful and extremely quiet. I think that is because it was made primarily as an animal trimmer, specifically low noise so as not to spook horses.

+4 on the Flowbee. I use one and estimate several thousand bucks I've saved over the years with it (not joking).

My son in law uses one as well, you cannot tell the difference when he pays someone to cut it vs using the Flowbee.
