I need some recommendations for a watch. Existing watch to be replaced is about 30 years old; about time to be replaced. It is something like this but not exactly (Coach branded, Movado mvmt).

https://www.coach.com/products...l?frp=CY253+SAD++WMN

Looking for something similar: quartz (solar a plus), thin/light, small-ish case (somewhat flexible here as long as the case is thin). Lightweight band - leather band is light.

Hoping for something that looks fashionable (understated) but isn't too expensive (less than $500?).

Hoping for a watch that is branded by a watch company.

Any suggestions for brands? I looked at Seiko and Tissot and couldn't find anything. The Coach above is the closet thing so far.

This Hamilton might work but a bit pricey:

ETA: sorry, should have indicated before. This is for my wife.

Casio oak? Citizen exceed.

If used is OK MRG 120t?

(If you want one, send me your wrist size. I have one in good shape, but the bracelet is too small for me.)

Thank you!! Citizen Exceed may be too pricey but I'll look into it more. I did find this on a quick skim of Citizen. Something like this may fit the bill:

This may be perfect. Is the Seiko Essentials line reliable? I guess at this price, if it lasts 5 years, I should be happy. Still, it would be nice if it lasted 10-20 years. The last watch lasted 30 years.... On the list of candidates.

Yup, it's a candidate although above the budget; it'll be a buy once, cry once purchase. Would definitely expect this to last 30 years. Is Joma shop good to go?

Thanks! I'll take a look. ESQ even has that dot a noon. Never heard of them before.

A smaller Hamilton Boulton under $500: Link. There’s a larger version the same color for $5 more as well.

I’ve purchased a $275 Tissot Gentleman’s Quartz, a $550 Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic automatic, and an Omega Speedmaster from Jomashop without issue.

I just gave the Jazzmaster to my oldest son for his high school graduation. It’s a really nice watch. If the Boulton is similar quality, I think your wife would really like it.

This is one of my favorite watches... Casio, very lightweight, all Titanium, Solar, Sets itself daily and thin.

The thinnest watch I own is my Movado Museum Classic on a stainless band with gold accents.

A Seiko quartz watch will last many years. The movements are not expensive. They just work.

the Eco-drives are nice and seem to be in line with what you're looking for.

(Added bonus- there's this dude around here on S/F... Dave. He sells watches, Citizens too! Wink)

Your talking to the right man I do this for a living.

If Solar is a must you are pretty much limited to Seiko and the Citizen Eco Drive line. They usually are between $200.00 - $300.00 dollars on sale.

Looks like your looking for a Square or Tank designed ladies watch for the wife.

That Hamilton watch uses a ETA movement with a very tiny 379 battery you'd be lucky if it lasts 2 years before it needs changing. Plus the movement is pretty fragile.

Movado does not make there own movements they use to use ETA Swiss movements now they use the cheaper Rhonda branded ones. Coach is hit or miss Rhonda Swiss for there nicer models and cheap Seiko's for the others.

Swiss Army use to make one like your looking for and that one was nice for the money.

Your not going to beat Seiko or Citizen they will last you easily 15-20 years. The solar capacitor in the Solar models last between 12-15 years before they go bad. You don't have to get a battery ever 3 years or so but when it goes bad it costs about 70 dollars plus to replace.

But no matter what don't pay retail even most Swiss Quartz watches you can get grey market or on sale below retail unless it's a high end luxury category like Omega or Cartier.

Today I'm wearing a Seiko Divers 150 that I bought in May of 1978 in the Dutch PX in Rheindahlen.

It keeps VERY precise time, batteries last around four years or so, and it looks almost like new.

If you can find a thinner-style Seiko, then I recommend them.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the insights. And the "inside" info on the Hamilton vs Seiko/Citizen.

I think the Tank style is what is desired - never knew the style had a name.

Will look more closely (search for) at tank style Seiko/Citizen with and without solar; solar is not must have but is desired if possible (available in the desired style).

I didn’t know it was called a tank. I always thought of it as a Cartier style but it looks like it’s a Cartier Tank. A very classic design.
