Who'da thought. Climbing a sheer rock face is not perfectly safe and has risks Pronoun: His Royal Highness and benevolent Majesty of all he surveys 343 - Never Forget Its better to be Pavlov's dog than Schrodinger's cat There are three types of mistakes; Those you learn from, those you suffer from, and those you don't survive.

It happens. The face heats up and gets a lot of sun during the hot Summers the rock face expands, Winter time it gets cold, sometimes iced over as water gets inside the various cracks, expanding as it freezes forcing the rocks to further crack. There's some gruesome pics at the Yosemite Search and Rescue office of climbers smashed by falling rock or, frozen in place during winter climbs.

The casualtys were not climbing. They were walking the base. As far as that goes, who knew that driving a road could get you killed? When the 3 brother rockfall occurred not all that long back, it swept across the road.

Rocks are dangerous. The government should ban rocks. No one needs that many rocks. If it saves just one child.... God Bless and Protect the Once and Future President, Donald John Trump.

I remember being at Yosemite yeas ago and was staying at the lodge I was out walking around in the early evening and I could hear this faint popping sound and couldn't quite figure out where it was coming from I managed to find a ranger and asked and she just laughed and pointed at El Cap and said 'see that small light' apparently, someone had set up camp on the face, was sleeping there for the night and they were popping popcorn using a small stove on their chest the rock was acting as a big speaker [B] Against ALL enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC

No, no, no, it's that stupid Gravity law that should be overturned. ********* "Some people are alive today because it's against the law to kill them".

From the "would have, should have, could have" files ... Camping out for the summer in Yellowstone, a rappelling buddy wanted to hitchhike to Yosemite and try El Cap. I wussed out. This was the '80s, sparse climbing, and my fitness never has been better. I'd be yanking far less weight up the cliff! This past May I revisited some of the Yellowstone rappelling sites (30+ years later), did a short climb ... wow, how the heck did I scramble up that rock face so easily? Like a goat !?!?!

Oh stewardess, I speak jive. |
El Cap is no joke. I'd hate to be around when that happened.

10 times bigger is a huge chunk of granite, nearly 10,000 tons (roughly 10,000 cubic yards) worth, succumbing to the inexorability of gravity. I wish I could have heard it break free from the face (from a safe place, like above it). It would be interesting to know if it was any more attention-getting than the sound a quarter-sized flake made breaking off a face I was free climbing.
From above: In this photo provided by Peter Zabrok, climber Ryan Sheridan who had just reached the top of El Capitan, a 7,569-foot formation, when a rock slide let loose below him Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, in Yosemite National Park, Calif. Friend of mine from MT died on El Capitan about four years ago. Slab of rock came loose and severed his rope, and he fell 200+ feet until another rope attached to his harness stopped him (this rope didn't stretch unfortunately). Scary when so many climbers are on there at once when the granite falls. https://youtu.be/EMifOD7sU28 -------------------- I like Sigs and HK's, and maybe Glocks

Eventually El Capitan will all be at the bottom of the valley. We forget that it is falling apart, day in and day out, because it usually does it very slowly, tiny bits at a time. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Don't worry there are a bunch of other routes on El Capitan....you can always wear a helmet.... _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain. Jack Kerouac
