Make America Great Again |
Does anyone else get these? About twice a year on average, I will start burping a whole lot, and the odor is a nasty sulfur smell like rotten eggs. I haven't eaten anything different lately, but they just started back up again during the night last night. Would love to know the cause so I can avoid this nastiness! I don't dare go anywhere in public where I'd be close to people, and won't even go over to my in-laws house for game night. Thanks! _____________________________ Bill R. North Alabama

Since others will no doubt venture in here, a sidebar warning that regular burping like you described can be a sign of underlying illness, like pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer. I think. Not a doctor, but this was a lead indicator for my MIL who eventually died of that disease. With the cycles you've described, that seems unlikely. You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

Studied up on that one and it seems highly unlikely... Anybody else have any ideas? _____________________________ Bill R. North Alabama

Some of the proteins used in protein supplements (e.g. protein shakes) have more sulfur in them in the form of amino acids (e.g.taurine). I've gotten some nasty rotten egg gas farts when I've randomly had one (e.g. grab a muscle milk at the c-store) or started drinking shakes after workouts. Any chance you had a new protein source? If not, I'd go see a gastroenterologist. The only time I had this happen, I had Salmonella gastroenteritis. However, if you had this, trust me, you would know. Sounds like you should get that checked out. I love Costco's $1.50 hot dogs but man, I'm burping garlic for the rest of the day after eating those. It's the only one that does that too which is weird.

So, what do you usually do. How long does it last? If it's not really associated with your last meal(?) and no involvement with the other end. It could be related to a condition called SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). Perhaps experiment with a lower FODMAP diet for awhile. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.or...hat-you-need-to-know

I agree with SigSentry - good chance it is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Ask your primary care to refer you to gastro for a hydrogen breath test. Non invasive and cheap.

No, I haven't. My list of specialists that I currently need to see is far longer than I have time or money for. If this only happens twice a year on average, I'll just live with it for now. I was just hoping there might be an easy solution that I had missed... Edit to add: I don't specifically do protein shakes, but I did have a heavy protein-loaded meal the day before. Will pay attention to that issue. _____________________________ Bill R. North Alabama
