I Deal In Lead |
I went to The Big Island in November of last year and QR codes were everywhere in Restaurants. For those older folks who didn't have a smartphone, the servers would produce a paper menu. Now I'm seeing it all over TV ads also. I'm actually thinking it's a good thing for me as it makes some things I do much faster.

Jim pretty much nailed it Its only going to become more prevalent because scanning QR codes is the new standing in line, people scan them just because they are there with no idea about what they are scanning. “We truly live in a wondrous age of stupid.” - 83v45magna "I think it's important that people understand free speech doesn't mean free from consequences societally or politically or culturally." -Pranjit Kalita, founder and CIO of Birkoa Capital Management

Since I don't have a smart phone I can't use QR codes. I'll do fine until places/web sites decide to only have them. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

I do not use the "QR Codes".. I do not use the "phone app" to order order anything.. I do not use the "self check out" options in stores.... call me old school if you want to but these computer generated sales options are going to be the ruination of us all. .. and some people cannot understand why the piss poor level of customer service that is being heaped on to the general public.. The more that they can try and force to use their new form of doing business without having to interact with a live human employee that they do not have to pay wages and benifits to it will continue and be expanded to force the public to change their shopping and searching habits ......... drill sgt.

QR codes were originally meant for production information in fabrication on a production line; invented by Denso Wave for Japanese auto production. They add a second dimension to the bar code previously used which adds a lot more information. Yeah, everybody in the world jumped on them. The auto parts store I worked at had them on the shelf price tags. Once in a blue moon someone would look something up, but this metro is a black hole of electronic advancement. It takes an app with smart phone using a camera and you still don't always go where it's intended due to bad laser printing or interpretation. This was all 5 years ago when it first became normalized in retail. We've just been searching with Maps when traveling, pick a restaurant before getting into town and reading their menu online. I haven't read a QR code ever. I like to know what a place is offering before I even walk in.

I've looked at the format of the QR code and figure it can provide about 400 bits of data max. That equates to about 20-25 printable characters--probably enough to hold a URL (if it's not too big). That's considerably more than a bar code, but still not very much data. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

The Publix grocery store chain uses them at checkout. If you install the Publix app on a smartphone (iPhone or Android), you can link a credit card to the app. I use a Capital One card that returns 3% cash back for groceries. The QR code shows on the display at the checkout register. Use the "Pay" feature of the Publix app to scan the QR code and Bob's your uncle. Payment is done, the linked card is charged. Every once in a while Publix gives you a two or three dollar discount at checkout if you pay with the app. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Went into a Burtons Grill in Massachusetts hostess gave me a card with a QR code, asked her for a menu, she said most people preferred the code less chance of germs, I replied if I’m going to eat the food here I don’t think I’m worried about germs from paper. She laughed and said good point and gave me the menu.

Down the Rabbit Hole |
There is a major push to force everyone to carry a smart phone. The NP I went to recently retired. I needed another clinic to refill my Blood pressure meds. Since I had been out of BP meds for several days, my BP was high. It was running around 180/110. I went to a local RedMed in my area. They gave me one option to fill out the new patient paperwork. They sent a link to my iPhone and asked me to fill it out online using the provided link. They would not see me otherwise. I walked out. A local Gym requires members to install an app. that must be used to enter the facility. Anyone who enters without using the app. will have their membership terminated. The mischievous side of me has toyed with the idea of printing and placing a bunch of stickers with the text, "Haha, made you look!" encoded in the QR code, just to mess with people. And then the practical side kicks in and reminds me it's not a good idea. God bless America.

Several of my doctors' offices now hand me a tablet for me to make entries. I don't refuse to do that, because my ability to see and fill out paper documents is getting worse all the time. I definitely would never agree to use a phone, however--I wouldn't be able to see what I was doing on a small screen. flashguyThis message has been edited. Ive actually started embedding them in presentations while training, using them to link to digital handouts. It save on copying and having handouts available, and everything is easily and quickly updated. Of course the discourteous fucks in the audience are usually on their phones anyway.

It's just a form of a 2D barcode, which we have been using in industry a long time. Everyone is fine with 1D barcodes on price tags right? Usually in industry we use data matrix because it could be printed with an impact printer on metal. QR's have to be printed on a label or laser etched. China loves the QR code and made it very popular for everything.

I would have filled out the paperwork if they provided the tablet. Nothing wrong with that. Diligentia, Vis, Celeritas "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." -- George Orwell

Has flyer with QR code. <Scans QR code> Taken to website with same info as flyer. Has a “Drink more Ovaltine!!? It’s a lousy commercial!” moment. Never scans a QR code again. Nope, they'll have to drag me, kicking and screaming. Don't hand me a tablet, don't ask me to scan anything.
