PHPaulLawn Guys - Self-propelled High Wheel mower?
Acquaintance of mine has a Husqvarna self-propelled mower that's actually a pretty nice machine, but...
He uses it in pretty rugged conditions - tall grass and hilly terrain. It has itty-bitty (10" rear, 8" front) hard plastic "tires" on it and it has very little traction on any but the most ideal surfaces. We've investigated various possibilities for larger or more aggressive wheels and come up with nothing practical.
Is there such a thing as a self-propelled high wheel mower? Given his physical condition, self-propelled is a must.

sourdough44 Something along the lines of a DR Field & Brush mower? They’ve changed over the years, mine is a 1996 vintage. I don’t use it as much as I used to, still going strong.
Another option is to have a mower deck with its own engine, pulled behind an ATV.

ridewvI had a DR Brush mower and one needs to be in decent physical shape to operate it for any length of time. It's essentially a little 2-wheel walk behind rotary cutter (brush hog) so it cuts heavy weeds, vines, and small saplings down, but doesn't do a great job cutting grass.
No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Agreed. Looking for something much more toward the lawn mower end of the scale.

ridewvI can't recall seeing such a mower for a long time. Maybe one of the commercial walk behinds but they'll be $$$.

TXLeIf the only issues is traction, drive 1/4" self tapping hex head screws around the rubber of the drive wheels. Taking it a step further you can cut a strip of a used MTB tire and fasten it around the wheels with said screws.

Wouldn't changing the tire size only on the rear mess up your height adjustment?
I think you would either not be able to get it level with the front or you would lose a lot of the range of verticle adjustment.

That was our first thought. The drive arrangement (drives all four wheels...sorta...) would require MAJOR modifications to whatever wheel was used, plus it would screw up the ratios and I don't think the system has sufficient torque to drive taller wheels. Then there's the ground speed issue.
Cut height is actually a minor consideration as he cuts at the max height now. Used primarily as a rough-country mower.

Speedbirdsimilar situation; I love my basic Honda push mower, but even on the tallest setting it is barely high enough for my likes in the summer. ~2-3" taller wheels would be ideal but the front and rear are very dissimilar and that seems to be where I'm hung up. (I was debating some kind of scheme where I wrapped the perfectly fine (But too small and hard) OEM wheels with something but pretty sure it would just be a ghetto looking, waste of time and effort fail)

That's still front wheel drive, so I don't know if you will really be gaining anything with that mower.
It might be more beneficial to find a 4wd model like

MoosehornManHusqvarnas I have worked on have a metal gear driving the plastic gear molded into wheel, not a good setup IMO, the wheels are not cheap to replace when they wear.
