Damn! And I just bought some of that the other day.

Any commercial BBQ sauce is going to have a lot of ingredients chemicals to help with shelf life, if you like sweet bbq then you'll get a lot of sugar in different forms.

I like for pork a vinegar based sauce, a favorite is Paducah Kentuckys Starnes BBQ. Sauce is excellent.


Ingredients:

1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup brown sugar or honey
2 tablespoons molasses
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
Salt, to taste
Water (as needed to adjust consistency)
Black pepper, to taste

It's everywhere! Those coffee creamers that are so popular - there's no dairy in them - they're made with essentially cooking oil and sugar water. Mmmm, lets add 1/4th of a cup of cooking oil to our coffee every morning!

I put down Sweet Baby Ray’s some time ago when I finally got serious about label reading. Stubb’s Original is pretty good. Kinder’s is not too bad either, although it does have corn syrup in it (not ID’d as HFCS), but it’s 7th on the ingredients list.

I always used to use Sweet Baby Ray's because it was the 'most volume for the money' at Costco. When I started paying more attention to ingredient lists and saw the HFCS I switched to Stubb's, which I think tastes better anyway.

Stubbs and a few others have reduced or sugar free sauces.

A lot of home made BBQ sauces use ketchup as a base - but many, like Heinz, are also loaded with HFCS. We're fortunate to have Whataburger Ketchup sold locally in stores which has no HFCS. Something else to keep an eye on.

I also found an app that is trying to keep folks informed on what ingredients Restaurants use - See Oil Scout (not free but fairly cheap) - its fairly new but as more folks join and the word gets out, its information is improving.

My favorite is
Rufus Teague brand- Touch O Heat.

Stubb's if I can't find it.

Not as common, but get "Hershey's Simply 5" instead. No HFC the last I looked. Tastes better in my opinion.

Years ago I spent a lot of time at a private label bottling company that made syrup and BBQ sauces and other stuff. This is pretty much accurate. Corn syrup, water, tomato paste, and a lot of powders/preservatives. The corn starch and preservatives are gross when you handle them all day if you are the one mixing the tanks.

If the garbage was only in your BBQ sauce, you may have a point. Problem is, that crap is in everything you buy. A little bit here and a little bit there pretty soon adds up to a lotta bit inside you.

^^^ The point is moderation in everything.

On whim I tried Baby Ray's No Sugar Added and I thought it was pretty good. More vinegar forward. Give it try. Add your couple TBS of sugar to take your edge off. I think you're still way ahead of the original stuff.

That salt isn't too bad either. But when you combine it in addition to salt in an already present rub, ... We just have to read the labels or make our own, which can be fun.

The problem is, EVERYTHING that comes in a bottle is this way. (or in a jar, or a can) So the only way to do "moderation" is to avoid it all as much as possible, then the few things you'll eat when you "have no choice" will still be more than moderation.
