Disgusting. Anyone that saw the video knows there was intent to injure.

An ice hockey star who accidentally killed his opponent with the blade of his boot during a match will not face charges.

The player, who was not named by police but has identified himself on a crowdfunder as Sheffield Steelers winger Matt Petgrave, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of American centre player Adam Johnson.

Nottingham Panthers star Johnson, 29, had his throat cut during a collision in the 35th minute of an Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) Challenge Cup match on October 28 2023.

The American collapsed in front of 8,000 horrified spectators at Sheffield's Utilita Arena, home of that evening's rivals, the Sheffield Steelers.

The incident was also broadcast online, as players formed a protective ring around Johnson as paramedics rushed onto the ice to treat him.

However, he was later declared dead after being taken to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Police launched an investigation following his death, and arrested Petgrave on suspicion of manslaughter.

The Canadian player was told to remain in the UK by police under his bail conditions - which were extended several times while the investigation continued.

From his UMD days.

With girlfriend. Mad Mad

Watched him play many, many games for the local college. This is a travesty that has led to mandatory neck protection for youth hockey in Minnesota.

I just watched a video of the "accident". Gotta say, that was one of the finest knife-edge kicks I've ever seen.

My heart goes out to that young man’s family. I hope the thug that got away with this is never allowed to set a blade on ice again.

This is reminding me a bit of the incident in Texas, where a young man deliberately knifed and killed another boy at a track meet, but has been released on bail???
I don’t understand this world. No repercussions for killing.

Watched the video; doesn't look very "accidental" to me. Been watching pro hockey for awhile and one thing that has impressed me is their skating skills and ability to remain upright despite being knocked around, and even when they do go down, I don't see their legs/blades going up in the air like on that video. That player looked like he lifted his leg up high on purpose, not due to loss of balance.

At a minimum, that player should be restricted from playing hockey on any level for the rest of his life due to his actions/behavior.

I’d love to hear the reason they decided not to prosecute. That appears pretty blatant.

Yes, and the crowdfunding of these killers is disgusting, infuriating.

kkina, I see and note the sarcasm in your quotation marks around "accident", and I share your opinion. It has been a number of years since I watched hockey, but I would be surprised if a head-height kick is part of the game, and I know it wasn't an accident.

The killer probably did not intend to murder Johnson, but he definitely intended to inflict serious damage with a skate blade aimed at Johnson's head. And he aimed it, no doubt in my mind.

I have to wonder if there is some history between the two.

Here's a link to the video. Funny, I didn't know high sidekicks were part of hockey play. Roll Eyes. Accidental, my ass.

At the very least reckless. I'd go so far as to suggest the kick was intentional; Petgrave didn't intend to cut his throat, I'll give him that.

I've played and watched a lot of hockey, that's the first time I've ever seen a movement like that.

I remember when this happened to another hockey player years back. They put pressure on the wound which was gushing blood until they got him to the hospital. He survived with a nasty scar.

Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk, 1989. Scariest thing I've ever seen (wasn't there, saw the videos).

The Sabres' athletic trainer had been an Army combat medic in Vietnam and was able to pinch off the blood vessels in Malarchuk's neck. Doctors in the stands ran down onto the ice and stabilized the wound quickly enough so he didn't bleed out on the way to the hospital.

After 11 days, Malarchuk was back on the ice. He retired a few years later and has experienced stress, alcoholism and PTSD over the past few decades.

Adam Johnson's neck wound was much more destructive and there was no chance to save him. He basically bled out on the ice. I saw the videos, and in all my years in officiating hockey I've never seen a player raise his skate like that to make a legitimate play or skating move.

I hope that if he intended harm, that his guilt drives him to a life filled with depression, despair, and disorder.

Intent is a difficult thing to prove.
Beyond a reasonable doubt.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

That does not look accidental at all. That looks premeditated. He might not have wanted to cut his neck but he definitely meant to do some harm. How can anyone believe the "falling excuse" as he cocked back his leg to kick him prior to him "falling".
