If they did well with it, they felt confident 4WD could negotiate the course.

This is one reason the Prerunner has the 4WD suspension, so those "prerunning" the race have a view from the same height as the 4WDs to follow.

I had a Toyota Prerunner back in the day, a few other 2WD trucks before that. I’m even up here in WI, hunt, have towed boats, all that.

I remember Gramps living in the U.P. of MI with his 2WD Ford, he hunted & fished all the time too. The OP lives in FL, yes plenty of 4WD trucks driving the FL pavement.

Yes, with gas mileage is minimal in most cases. One does save a little with ‘proper’ maintenance, going 2WD.

I’m a touch ‘old school’, still have my ‘inverted V’ tire chains. My Prerunner would darn near climb a tree with those tire chains on. Of course, how many people want to get out & put tire chains on, near zero.

Right now it’s 75 inside, 14 & windy outside. Not many want to fiddle with a woodstove & firewood to make it so.

I always wondered why they called that truck a Prerunner.

I had a V6 auto 2005 Prerunner. I liked it except for the gas mileage, which was about 1-2 mpg less than my previous 2002 Tundra with a V8. Remember that the early Tundra was much smaller than today's.

Those 2nd Gen Tacomas where never thought of as economy vehicles. But they ran forever when properly maintained which is why people tolerate the less than Steller MPGs. The The 3rd gens aren't much better but a diligent driver can milk 19-20 mpgs with a stock truck and so far that engine is proved very durable. People complain about the transmission and the shift tuning which is justified. Toyota apparently tuned for max MPG to satisfy requirements. Aftermarket tunes fix most all of these shift issues.

My 2nd Gen Prerunner squeezes out 21-22 mpg in mixed driving, but I have the 4cyl engine and a 5sp manual. Not stellar economy, but good enough for my driving.
