Cessna 550 goes down in Tierrasanta neighborhood south-east of Montgomery Field in San Diego.

Not a great plan by the PIC. Too bad he didn't just stop short at an airport with decent weather. Prayers for those lost. Hard IMC is very unforgiving.

I like his channel, but sometimes he is woefully wrong on his information with corporate jets. The c550 has an approach speed of 110 knots, which puts it clearly in the cat b category meaning he was legal to shoot that approach. Some of the pilots other decisions were questionable, but Juan is clearly wrong with that information.

That’s disappointing, I really enjoy his videos. I’m a subscriber (and private pilot SEL) and enjoy his analysis of incidents. My eyes roll back when he shows in IFR approach plate but I count on him for accurate info.

This >< close to home at the end of a long ass trip I can see myself making the wrong decision.

In my 70 years I’ve be never even been on an airplane… of any kind type or size. Not afraid to fly I just never had the opportunity or reason.

Just the casual observation as a fan of Juan Brown’s…
Has anyone else noticed that the vast majority of these airplane crashes are old airplanes?
We’re seeing 40 50 60 year old airplanes in the majority of these crashes, coincidence?

Half jokingly, I just told my wife if she ever does have the opportunity to fly again, ask how old the plane is before hand, and walk away if it’s over ~30 years old!

An airplane's age is nowhere near as important as the quality of maintenance that it has received.

I sold my v-tail after I had owned it for more than 30 years, give or take, and it was 25 years old when I bought it. It is now 61 years old and still flying regularly. It was on its fourth engine when I sold it.

The controller tole him the ceiling was below 200 feet.
Apparently he didn't set his altimeter before the approach.

The lowest DA* for any instrument approach at that airport is 250' AGL.
*DA: Decision Altitude is the altitude at which the pilot must initiate the Missed Approach procedure if s/he does not have the runway environment in sight. So, if the ceiling was truly 200', the pilot was in violation by continuing the approach.

Part 91 he can start the approach even if ceiling is below mins, correct? As long as the latest official report was visibility at or above minimums, continuing an approach is legal. At the airline we were limited by visibility only in terms of proceeding past the FAF. After that, the pilot needs to see something in order to continue below the decision height/altitude.

So if he thought he saw approach lights he could continue on down to 100' above touchdown zone. More than one accident has happened when the pilot thought he saw approach lights or runway lights and continued down below DA/DH, or, intentionally continued below minimums under the assumption that staying on the localizer and glide slope would get him down safely.
