Even though the expanding sun won’t engulf the earth for another 4 or 5 billion years, its increasing heat radiation will boil away all the water in about another billion years, so we have that long to either relocate ourselves elsewhere or move the earth into a wider orbit around the sun.

Physics predicts that sun's increasing heat will make Earth inhabitable long before the sun progresses to a red giant.

Lots of things can happen in that billion years, too. Comets and asteroids can cause global events -- just ask a dinosaur. More recently, if comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 had impacted Earth instead of Jupiter, it would have been a bad day.

And let's not forget that the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies are predicted to merge, starting about the time our Sun is in full red giant stage. The merger may -- or may not -- have an effect on our little solar system.

Gamma ray burst, don't worry it will be quick.
