Twenty years ago I looked forward to my morning coffee and toast, and reading the newspaper. A good dump after was icing on the cake.

Fast forward to 2018, now GANNETT has the market cornered in AZ by owning the largest AZ newspaper and three tv stations. Liberal biased BS is not news.

We still get a printed newspaper though. My wife picks up old copies of USA TODAY that our community center doesn't sell. Printed news best purpose is in our fireplace.

Unfortunately everywhere I have lived in the last 30 years has had a liberal rag for a newspaper.

As stated above the Orlando Slantinal is a useless piece of democratic talking point trash. When it comes time to vote, I just look at their recommendations and vote for the opposite choice.

I live in an area that isn't "served" by a daily newspaper. Its actually a fairly large area that the deep state commies in Washington like to refer to as an SMSA. Its really a kind of Gerrymandering to make our opinions appear to agree with what they believe.

In my long gone youth, we actually had 2 papers that kind of kept each other in check. Then the business interests of one beat out the other, and we went down to one fishwrap. For a long time I'd receive phone calls urging me to subscribe. For a while I was kind of polite (as much as I could muster.) The young person making the call couldn't understand how I could disbelieve the crap they were pushing. But I can be hardheaded and just stubborn.

On rare occasion, probably due to failing memory, I pick up a section of the paper in Panera while they prepare my lunch. It just confirms my decision from years ago.

I buy the Sunday edition of the Richmond Times Dispatch. Sometimes the Washington Post, usually read both during Sunday lunch.

The political articles are taken sith a grain of salt, but I enjoy the trAvel articles, human interest articles.

I have been reading the RTD since 2000. It has gone from a conservative (barely) print to a liberal (mostly) print. They are a bunch of hypocrites. Condemn anything pertaining to the Civil War, on the Confederate take, unless it concerns their tourism and money making capacity, then, Johnny Rebel is wonderful.

I subscribe to two weekly newspapers, one from Highland County, which I enjoy, one from my local county, weekly articles condemning the board of Supervisors.

Me too, always enjoyed ready the paper in the evening, then it went to the woodstove. Now only get the local county paper which is delivered on Wednesdays just to see what's going on in the area.

My girlfriend delivered papers for 31 years. I did for over 20 so we don't want to even see a paper now.

We get a weekly fish wrapper in this small town.
Takes 5-10 minutes to glean everything of interest. It is satisfying to then be done with it.
If it were on-line, I'd get sidetracked off in google over some minutiae from an article and end up spending the rest of the day running around digital land.

Same here, we read the local paper (IA/IL Quad City Times, another WashPost wannabee) every morning even though the editorial AND news pages are 99% full of $hit. I get far more news from the www and it's free. The only section our paper can't screw up is the obituaries, and sadly we often know people who have died.

Dad is old-school - never learned computers. As I've said before, he is a World War II veteran.

Prices have gone up drastically over the last three years. I cancelled about 18 months ago partially because they couldn't deliver my paper properly. Kept getting it under my car, under the eaves where rain would drip, on the lawn where sprinklers would get it. They changed their terms of delivery without notifying subscribers. Used to always be on the porch.

He just got his subscription renewal. He pays an additional dollar per week to get the weekly TV guide. The new rate is $400 per 6 months!!

Christmas eve paper was two sections - about 8-10 pages each. Christmas day wasn't much more. I'll watch and see what the normal page count is and talk with him. I think it is important that he read current events to maintain his passage through time.

I emailed and noted that he doesn't use computers. The email I got from customer service more or less stated that they are changing to more online, and they get less advertising for the paper, so they are passing the increases to the subscribers. Their language was "We can no longer expect advertising to support all these platforms and options, so our readers will now share the support more equitably".

They offered to lower his rate $3 per week. I'll take them up on it for now, and see if I can show Dad how to read it via an iPad or tablet.

The Denver Post is so small now. It used to be 18" or 20" across each page. Now it is about 10" or maybe at the most 12". They have REALLY cut down on their staff. I do not know that the Denver Post will be a daily 5 years from now.
They have moved their operation outside of the city of Denver.

Regards,
arlen

The Fort Worth Star Telegram at one time had very wide circulation even outside of Texas. It is a sad vestige of its former self. Now a liberal rag, it endorsed Beto O’Rourke over Ted Cruz during the last Senate race. It comes as no surprise as the McClatchy chain out of Sacramento now owns it.

Our local paper was pretty conservative for around 100 years. It was then bought out by a "media group" and is a shell of itself and only printed 3 days a week now. They canned all of the good reporters and about 5 or 6 liberals write the whole thing which caused me to cancel it after being a subscriber for more than 30 years. I expect it to eventually go out of business because the only reason it seems to exist now is the declining number of advertisers in it.

I guess I’m the odd one here.

I get the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times daily.

I have to admit the Times goes overboard on liberal issues and I don’t read all articles.

I like to know what the other side is pushing.

I read two "newspapers" on the internet daily. The Detroit Freepress, and the News Herald, both do a pretty good job of being online "papers".

They are also free! Big Grin
