WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) Thursday, March 7, 2019

The Wichita Police Department arrests a 14-year-old boy for aggravated assault after surveillance footage from Feb. 14 shows the teen steal a gun from a man working on a car in the 800 block of N. Chautauqua in north Wichita.

Police made the arrest they say, after Crime Stoppers featured the case and received information from a citizen who saw the surveillance video. They booked the teen into the juvenile detention facility for aggravated assault, theft and possession of marijuana.

Police say on Feb. 14, a 31-year-old man identified as the victim in this case was working on his vehicle when the teen approached from behind and took the man's .9 mm handgun out of the holster on his waist. They say the teen then pointed the gun at the man and told him to back away before running south through the alley between Chautauqua and Erie. The man chased after him. There were no reports of injuries, police say.

Police say the case will next be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.

Wichita police are searching for a teen who they say stole a man's gun while he was working on his car last month.

The theft happened on Feb. 14 in the 800 block of N. Chautauqua.

Home surveillance shows the teen, around 17-years-old, walk up from behind the man while he's working on his car and pull a 9mm handgun out of the man's waist holster.

The teen points the gun at the man. They both back away and the suspect runs off.

Police say the man chased the thief through the alley where said he was shot at. Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot at the same time. No one was hurt.

Officers searched area but couldn't find the suspect. Now, they're asking for the public's help.

"This is just another case of a gun being unaccounted for on the streets which could possibly be used to commit another crime. We're hoping someone has some information out there to bring to us so we can solve this," said Wichita Police Officer Kevin Wheeler.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect in the video is asked to call Wichita Police detectives at 316-268-4407, Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or online at wichitacrimestoppers.com. Tips that lead to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2500.

The crook now has your gun. You're now empty handed. And you decided to give chase. Lucky you didn't get killed.

I have been in a similar situation, and somehow knew it would be okay to follow. End result in this case is that the thief is now hit with aggravated assault and will spend more time in jail.

Was it 14? Or was it 17? The original post quotes the article, which states both ages.

I'm guessing that it's 17, and the 14 comes from a typo induced by the date: Feb 14.

I bet the victim re-evaluates his holster selection and gets something with retention now. Also not sure if he was open carrying or his coat rode up while working on the car but concealed carry could have been beneficial.

No, you don't know. You're just lucky you didn't get hurt. And, there's a big difference between following but keeping a good distance and chasing the criminal. There have been cases where the victim decided to chase and ended up getting killed by the scum with his own gun.

Thug larva. Well on his way to his next big adventure. Hopefully ending with exsanguination followed by unavoidable cardiac arrest.

I’m in the, execute him now camp.

This guy will continue his life of committing crime, and citizens will get hurt. If they take him out of the gene pool now think of the statically data he won’t be committing.

And I’d say that stealing someone’s car should result in a hanging too. Back about 150 years ago we did exactly that, hanging, for stealing a mans ride-his horse.

Original article said he appeared to be 17, turns out he was only 14.

The victim and owner of the gun should be allowed to pistol whip the shit outta this young thug (in front of all his thug bros) who thought it was OK to STEAL someone else's property.

I spent my first 40 years in Wichita. The 800 block of N. Chautauqua is probably not where you want to go.
