It is one of the hardest things to do, but you should be strong in not letting him suffer.

I am sorry , it hurts, and there is no way around it, my sympathy going out to you.

They weasel their way into our hearts and cement that relationship with unconditional love, friendship mode always on and expecting so little in return. Our lives are richer because of dogs - that's for sure! Every time I have had to put one down it has ripped a large hole in my soul. Still wouldn't trade the gift of a pet for anything. I always cry as I hold them for their last breath - and I will never let a pet go thru that process alone. Your grief is a sign of a wonderful treasure in your life. My prayers for peace for you and your family!

The last one I helped was a female Golden we had picked up as a pup. She lived long and well. She outlived her male companion by 2 years or so.

I was left alone with her as the veterinarian prepared the shots. With tears in my eyes, I put my hands on her head and asked Heavenly Father to watch over Molly until I caught up.

I know were Molly....and Barney and Will and Daisy and Mac and Skip are today.

spend the day or weekend spoiling the shit out of him! Then when you take him to the vet you should be there. It's not fun. But I believe we owe them that, to hold them and pet them until the end. It was one of the worst things I've ever done but I'm glad I did it, he wasn't alone at the end.

+10. Don't just drop him off. Both you and he deserve more as the last memory they have of you and you of them. I was holding each of our last two and their last breath and dropping of their head in their comfortable "Dads" arms was something I will never forget.

Sorry, getting teary eyed right now and prayers said and sent.

If it's available in your area, I'd recommend having the vet come to your home for it. It eliminates that "going to the vet" stress that every dog gets.

Thank you all for your best wishes, advice and replies. Charlie is curently holding his own with the help with some pain medication. I think we will have to make the trip in ther next few days however.

Rest assured I will not leave him alone when the time comes. Although Charlie is our first dog he isn't our only dog. He has some buddies that keep him company and who will miss him also. I am sure he will have plenty of great dogs to play with and plenty of people to give him love and attention when he is no longer suffering. He will let me know when he is ready. Hopefully I will be too.

It's a horrible, rotten thing that they pass. Just know that it's part of every dog owner's life, and it never gets any easier.

This takes a lot of courage. I'm sorry it hurts so much.

My buddy Charlie passed away at home about 11:00 pm. tonight. He was having a good day and evening but took a turn for the worse about 10 pm. He was such a good dog, my very first. I don't think we could have made any better decisions as we all agreed that he was doing fairly well up until the very end. We will all miss him.

I will try to post a picture if I can get Imgur figured out.

This picture was taken just a few days ago.

Thank you all.

Sorry for your loss.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Man, I know what you’re going through. We lost our oldest 14 year old German Shepherd a couple months ago. Her slow down was over a couple of years. She’d had a major stroke and didn’t think she’d make it but she came back and lived another couple of years. I found her one morning with labored breathing and couldn’t get up. She wouldn’t eat or drink and I knew her body was shutting down. She didn’t appear to be in pain. We spent time with her and she died the second night after it started. If she hadn’t I would ya e taken her in to have her put down with help from the vet. It was a hard loss to swallow but just last Saturday my mother also passed away after surviving severe and debilitating strokes that left her crippled and with moderate vascular dementia. It’s been hard. I try to find solace in our faith and also in our newest GS dog and a daughter due in mid July. I bought the newest shepherd two years earlier knowing our older dog would pass sooner rather than later. Also, we are naming our expected daughter after my mom. I’ll see them both again. Hang in there. I know what you’re going through.
