We need new windows, Existing are aluminum frame original to the house (1995). Seals are broken, foggy, and lots of condensation on the aluminum frame.

My god what a circus. I'm getting 5 quotes and have been thru three. 22 windows standard size double hung nothing fancy.

What's your budget? What number are you looking for? Will you finance? They all throw out a wildly inflated number. But wait, there are discounts and, if you sign today, even more discounts.

Sound familiar? Damn it's irritating

Yea, thats a whole new level of scum.

Sales marketing tricks windows sales use

We did siding and windows together. I narrowed it down to 5 companies to come out and give me a bid and I had to ask 2 of those companies to leave. One company sent 2 salesmen who spent almost an hour pitching a styrofoam backed fiberglass siding that I had no interest in despite it being made with space technology. When they told me that I couldn’t use Hardie board because the additional weight would cause my foundation to completely sink into the ground, we were done. And they weren’t even one of the 2 I asked to leave.

I had found the windows sales tactics rabbit hole before meeting with any of them and it was amazing how accurate they are. I made it clear when setting up the appointments that I wanted a bid, 5 companies, decision to be made by the endnof the month, etc and a few were still pushing to get a contract signed that day.

Call Don Young Windows here locally. Google them. Thermally broken aluminum. You can pick your color on the frames. Dual pane, with gas. They should be able to refer you to a contractor in your area.

What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

We had the ultimate lunacy quote from Renewal by Anderson, as everyone knows it's a show, books, samples, explaining how windows work, who bought the company who works there.

Once done, the quote for the windows and doors total..... a bit over $200,000. Two hundred freaking thousand dollars....

Then the discounts, and before he could get it out the Wife said "I don't care how much you discount it, this is over" and got up and left the table. At this point I'm laughing inside and said, "so what's the discount price"

$170,000. Yeah, that isn't happening....

Run from Renewal and if you have a meeting setup, they'll just make the others seem reasonable....

I had to replace my roof a couple of years ago. Had a heck of a time even getting people to bid it out, but ultimately I got a couple. Cheapest was $18k, which I thought was insane. Last guy comes out and I told him up front that the cheapest quote I had was $18k, and if he couldn't beat that then let's not waste each other's time. He looked around and came back with $38k, then spent almost 2 hours trying to sell me on it. I almost had to outright order him out of my house to get rid of him. I ended up doing it myself for $4k, and it's been fantastic...weathered a couple of major storms already this year with zero damage and no leaks. Contractors are a rip-off.

Well, don’t price whole house generators then!

Three years ago we got prices close to 20k. Generator and additional necessary parts, 6-7k. The rest labor, and that didn’t take into consideration that I’d have to have our gas meter changed to a larger one. All my electrician friends have either retired, passed away or moved out of state so I’m at the mercy of the seller.

For that kind of money I’ll roll my Harbor Freight inverter generator out of the garage and plug it into the transfer panel that was here when we bought his house.

Just had generator work done. $8K difference in quotes, with the more detail oriented guy being lower.

Friend in Nashville had the same generator quoted. Instead of my $20K he was told $60K ( #Brentwood )

Check at a local Buulding Supply (NOT Home Depot or Lowes, etc) If they sell windows, ask for one of their installers or name of an installer. Much better than the high pressure over priced windows.

Yeah, we had Andersen come by and quote us $60,000 for about 20 windows in our San Diego house. The neighbor next door had fallen for it, she had to do it over several years to afford it. We ended up getting IWC aluminum low-e dual pane windows (insulation block between interior and exterior), new install so new flashing, trim...all for $20,000.
