I dropped off the trusty Toyota for a tire rotation and balance this morning. Easy, right?

Well, no. I noticed a nail head shining at me last Friday after work, and was smart enough to not pull it out right then and there. So I marked that, and added it to the note I left with the tire shop.

I got a call a few minutes ago. The nail hole is "too close to the sidewall to patch," yada-yada. Three hundred and fifteen bucks for the new tire.

Household expenses have been crazy over the last two months... what's another three Benjamins, right? Grrrrr. Mad

I've got slow leaks [2-3psi over 2 weeks] in the LR of both cars. Fairly certain the Expedition is too near to patch, and the Michelins still have a ton of tread left.

The Legacy is due for tires in the not distant future, so it's just maintenance fills when needed.

We went to a matinee movie and saved $2.50 each. The wife's phone leapt out of the car, landed face down on a pebble. New phone was about $800.

They always tell you it's too close to the sidewall. They make more money on a new tire than a plug!!

Yah the old to close to the sidewall. That’s what they told me at the tire shop. I said okay thanks, took it to a truck tire shop, they took the tire off the rim, put a mushroom plug on from the inside and that was it. Ran that tire until replacing all four tires. Never had any problems.

I got a nail in a tire on my Mini, DIY 'gummy snake' plug & its still had a slow leak.
Discount wouldn't touch it [afyer they discounted the tire & saw the plug.

Took it to another tire shop, small with 4 locations, they patched it at no charge & I'd never stepped foot in there before.

Had to get a new sump pump yesterday.
Pump, check valve, fitting and 1 1/2” PVC = $320
Easy enough job, probably 45min total from start to finish.

Front windshield on 2025 Jeep = $1500.

Put the PVC in the jeep, like I’ve done with PVC, conduit, lumber about 100 times before.
This time, the PVC caught the spare tire, and, well…

Yep, happened to me several months ago. Tire store said that and wouldn't patch it; wanted to sell me a new tire. I left and took it to a service station and they patched it, no problem.

I know the feeling.

I got soaked out of two new truck tires when I ran over a Schrader valve. The tire shop said that the width of the Schrader valve was too wide to patch and I needed two tires because on the rear axle they said it was not good to run a new tire with a halfway used tire.

Since this is my one ton truck and I pull a 15,000 pound trailer with it, I thought it was better to follow the lead and replace both tires. That was over a $700 bill.

I have gotten to a point where I am having to patch the tire myself. A lot of tire shops don't want to take a chance and have it possibly leak again after they try to fix it.

Several times they have told me it is too close to the sidewall for them to patch. I have had to fix it myself. Takes a lot longer to fix it as I have to take the tire back and get it rebalanced again. But it has saved me hundreds of dollars.
