A letter came in the mail yesterday to our house from our State’s Department of Revenue.
It had our address and someone’s name that does not live here and as far as I know never lived here. I know the guy who built our house and lived in it before us.
In the the address window it also said Fraudulent Tax Return Info.
So I called the Department of Revenue today and told the lady this letter had come to the house, from them, addressed to someone who does not live here and I was inquiring why this was sent to my residence as I was/am concerned someone is using my address that shouldn’t.

She informed me that she would have no way of knowing why that letter was sent to my address and I should call the post office to inquire.

I informed her the post office just delivers to the address on the envelope and has no clue the reason behind it.

In this case the letter was sent by your office so your office would be the one to know why it was sent.
She responded that there would be no reason for them to know why this letter was sent.
I then asked how many letters their office sends out with no reason behind the letter.
She then said sorry and that maybe I should check with the police.
At this point I was slightly beginning to lose my patience. So I asked who in the office would be able to know why this letter was sent from their office.
She again said no one would know. I then was like that is complete nonsense!
She finally transferred me to someone else and he said that sometime when they don’t get responses to their letters they then use a number of databases and send letters to all the addresses they find associated with a name.
I informed him I have lived here for 10 years and I know the person who built the house and lived here before me and I am 99% sure this name would have never used the address and I was concerned about my address being associated with the name especially since the letter is clearly about suspicious tax return info.
So he said he would look into it and get back with me.

Why do so many folks have so much difficulty just saying I don’t know but let’s find someone who possibly can answer the question.

That's the key word: "let's."

Typically, there's no "let's" to it -- people expect you to do the work. There's no interest from them in actually participating in the task.

God bless America.

I might have you confused with somebody else. I thought that you are "the police."

You are not confused but she would have had no way to know that.
I was already pretty bothered with the woman so I did not even begin to venture down that road.

I just thought of a long ago incident involving a city I lived in.

Police Chief was driving an unmarked car, street clothes and stopped to turn left into his driveway. Struck from behind, he exited his car at the same time the at fault driver got out. Looking at the damage he asked the Chief “Should we call the police?”

Chief answered “No need to, I’m the police!” as he radioed in for a marked car.

You did your part. Throw it out. They will make sure to contact you if they need. Still that sucks. If you can’t help, offer to get a manager.

You talked to someone who's manning a receptionist desk at a government office. She's been there most likely for less than an year. What you called about isn't covered in the book.

But, yeah, someone would have some thinking, would have said, "Let me get your contact information and I'll go get guidance from my supervisor."

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Wow. Some people can't think on their feet (or sitting in a chair answering phones).

I say open it up.....
