While I don't understand ugly, I do have a pair or 2 of eccentric eyeglasses. I wear these things from when I wake up until I go to bed. They might as well be appealing.

People have worn funky glasses (or shades) as a sort of trademark, to make them stand out, practically since glasses were invented.
But I believe the image in the above post is what the OP is talking about.

I remember those, as I saw quite a few military members who wanted something other than BCG's. I wasn't too far away from all the bases in San Antonio. One fellow relayed to me that although most frames were black, if you were a "spook" you got gray (exact same frame), supposedly so you couldn't be ID'd as military. I've no idea if that was true or not. It certainly wasn't effective.
