I’m at about 50% staffing going into the busy season and my closer calls out because he’s “feeling stuffy.” I’m too old to be running a freakin $8 million department by myself. Mad

Unless that’s a paranoid company COVID policy, tell that asshole he’d better have a doctor's note.

Unless I’m dying, puking, feverish, or otherwise incapacitated, I’m at work.

I have friends in the Bar/Restaurant industry as Managers, Bar Tenders and Owners.

A few other friends in different places in private industry.

The all say the same thing:
Most, not all, but MOST of the people today would rather stay home and make $100 than go to work and make $150-200...

Workmans comp, COVID relief, whatever you call it...

On the plus side of the coin, they (Owners and Managers) are also saying the same thing:
This is separating the "Wheat from the Chaff"!
The people that want to go out and make money, hustle... Well, they're making it.

One friend that owns a bar hired a Former Marine as a bouncer / bar back. Owner asked me to look at his application, and I was there for his interview. My friend hired him for the Bouncer / Bar Back job... that lasted a weekend, then he was tossed behind the bar to bartend / bar back because the bartenders didn't want to show up to work. That lasted about a month... now he's assistant managing the place but refuses to give up the bar tending gig because it's just too much "free money" being tossed at him when he's behind the bar!

You want to make money, it's out there to be made!

What is a "bar back?" I'm not familiar with that term.

I still want to know where the hell all these people that quit the restaurant and retail and other service sector jobs went? It's not like ALL of them went and found better paying jobs and all the "free" money for sitting at home on your ass is pretty much gone now. So...they still have to eat and pay rent so WHERE ARE THEY???

Basically a bartender's assistant, or sometimes a bartender in training. Bartender makes the drinks. Barback delivers them, handles payment, chops garnishes, cleans glasses, changes kegs, restocks bottles in the cooler, etc.

Kinda similar in concept to the relationship between a waitress and a busboy.

Often the barback also does some of the simpler drinks during busy times, like beers and simple cocktails like Vodka Soda or Jack and Coke.

Less busy bars will usually just have a single bartender who does everything. Busier bars may have a bartender and a barback, or multiple bartenders with one or more barbacks. But depending on the size of the bar, it's actually possible to have too many people behind the bar at one time. So it can be better to have two people who are really busy than three or four people who are constantly tripping over each other.

Correct. All the casino bars have them even though most drinks are "on the gun". Obviously call brands are not. The bar backs are the gopher for the bartender. They hope to become a bartender one day. It is hard physical work lifting kegs and cases of beer.

Student loans. Apply for loan and live off it while maybe taking a class online or two. Should be good for 4 years of living expenses

If the person is truly sick, I would prefer them to stay home instead of coming in and infecting everybody else and bringing total productivity down even further.

Can't the person work from home while he's sick?

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I wonder how many decided to start selling drugs? Cash money, no record of anything, no taxes, sleep til noon.

I'm serious, no joke. Drugs are becoming more and more common, everywhere all the time.

Previous poster was correct retail. I’m running the lumber and building materials (roofing, concrete, drywall, siding, etc) part of it. In addition to all the administrative duties and ridiculous meetings I’m out there loading concrete and shingles for customers, helping pull orders, unloading trucks, cutting wood, cleaning up, stocking shelves...all of it. Half the time I’m being pulled all over the store helping everyone else. Why? Cause I get shit done. What do I get in return? Employees complaining that I’m “mean” or “scary.” The scary thing I can’t do shit about. I’ve got resting angry face and a deep voice. The mean thing...well fuck me for expecting anyone to stay busy. And if you expect me to help you without all the info I need to get things done properly, I WILL call you out on dumping your problems on me and disappearing. Roll Eyes

Rant over. Temporarily.

Good question. I have a couple of family members who were more than happy to get paid to do nothing, but (with one exception) they are back to work now because the free money stopped flowing.

Ha! I normally buzz my head clean. For a bet at work, I grew out my hair for a few months. A few people told me it made me look "less intimidating" and "more approachable". I immediately went back to buzzing my head. Big Grin
