The house we had in Vegas had that setup and was constructed circa 2002. So it's not particularly new at least in some areas. Fortunately our pod was right across the street.

Southern Colorado here. Current home was built in 1999, one of 20 homes on a private cul-de-sac. Community mailboxes in the center of the property, within 100 yards of every front door, and situated so we can pull up alongside to check mail from the car. Area is also well-lighted and in full view of every home, so anyone hanging around would be fully exposed, and no problems with tampering or theft have occurred.

Two bad knees, bum hip, old spinal fracture, and I'm still able to take care of the mail.

We bought a new construction house south of Houston.mMailbox in a cluster about 200 yds away on the corner. Realized daily mail checks weren’t important. We checked it every other day.

When we moved to Utah we needed to drive to the PO for our mail, it was a few miles. Several years ago they installed clusters in the neighborhood, now we're about 1/4 mile away. It's no big deal, wife walks the dog there or else we drive by almost every day. We're a small subdivision, 65 homes, with two clusters.

I've said it before, other than the occasional package, one mail delivery a month would be sufficient for me.

Which makes me wonder how many times I could hold the mail for the maximum time before they wouldn't let me do it anymore? Resume delivery for two days, re-hold again. They'd probably need a whole truck just to drop it off after a month, there's that much crap every day. What a waste of paper and effort.

Not sure about you guys but we're having issues w/ the centralized mailbox break-ins. Thieves are breaking into the mailbox cluster and grabbing mail and packages for dozens of houses per stop.

To date, USPS has not been able to curb these thefts. It's a fucked up system.

You can drive to the mailbox without using any gas!

I have no idea when it was mandated by USPS, but we had cluster mailboxes in 1982 when I bought a new townhouse in Gaithesburg MD. And they were not a new idea in that community even then.

I wonder if the mailman would bring it to your door and put it in a non mail box container for 465 dollars per year ?

Seems like there could be some type of arangement made,

You can get a hardship delivery. If you're disabled, and live alone, you can have a box put up right next to your front door, even if the rest of the route is curbside/mounted/whatever.

The cluster box thing is simple, time. I have a section 8 apt complex, right next to an assisted living place on my route, I deliver almost 100 peoples mail in about 15 minutes. The rest of my route is walking, most 15 minutes splits have less than 40 houses on them. And, even if they don't get mail, or are vacant I still have to walk by them.

What is the procedure for getting this done? Asking for a friend (really!).

Not unless they change the rules. Right now they are prohibited from giving you the mail over the counter. My mailbox failed during one of the colder winters around here so I left it to wait until spring. At least that was the plan. I would just drive to the Post Office on my wat to work and pick the mail up. Not so said the Post Mistress. Their rules require us to have a mailbox into which the carrier places the mail.

My post on the first page addresses this specifically. It's a shit-show around here & is showing no signs of letting up.

USPS will remove the centralized mailbox and you can pay 280 dollars per year for a PO Box. They have also removed the blue mailboxes all over town, including the ones in front of the post office. Do not expect them to investigate.

Since I lived at home, I don't think I've lived in a place where mail was delivered to a mailbox at my house. I don't really care one way or another now as all my mail and packages go to a UPS store box anyway.

When I was a mail carrier, it seemed easier delivering to individual mailboxes. At least that made packages easier to deliver as I had to stop at each house whereas I could pass up the house itself to the cluster box with the package I had to deliver to the front door.
