Don't post as if you're talking to the whole membership; not everyone is guilty of whatever trespass you're talking about. Did you mean to lecture the whole membership? Maybe not, but I sure read it that way.

"We are ignoring our own generally understood rules and failing in respecting the forum and each other."

As in the common vernacular, who is this "we?" You and the mouse in your pocket? I know you mean well but I don't like being scolded as part of a group when I haven't done anything.

And isn't your post ignoring the generally understood rule that we don't have an expressed set of generally understood rules other than we are expected to behave as if we are visitors in someone's home?

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

He's not lecturing or scolding. By my read he's taking stock of what it is to participate in the board and wishing people would do it more fully.

The man is expressing his feelings, and wants to strengthen the community here. If you feel scolded, perhaps you need to explore that for yourself, because it's your problem.

His post isn't ignoring that general rules aren't posted. What "the generally understood rule that we don't have an expressed set of generally understood rules other than we are expected to behave as if we are visitors in someone's home" means, is that the board ownership doesn't have a boilerplate at the top of the board for everyone to read. Because people are expected to act like adults. If a member wants to summarize the unwritten, it sure seems to me he's doing us all a service.

Nothing is perfect, but we can all try together. As I said many moons ago, in the context of these unwritten and sometimes changing rules.. "Sigforum is an organic learning experience."

There is no need to chastise or attack Artie for this thread. It is entirely well meaning.

Arc.

Great post. Sometimes we get on each others nerves but what family doesn't? Big Grin

The members I've seen most in person here are Artie, V-Tail and Dave. All are fine human beings.

Art,

We haven't done lunch since last fall...

I read the OP, know where you're coming from and take it to heart.

What's odd is to have read it then go back out and observe behavior in the forum.

Seems the most egregious offenders are long time members who should know better.

There's plenty of examples on the front page.

I'm not chastising or attacking Artie. I expressed my feelings same as you observed that he did. I asked him a straightforward question whether he meant to lecture the whole membership.

My being scolded for something I'm not doing isn't a problem that's with me. I already acknowledged Artie's well meaning when I said, "I know you mean well." There wasn't even a question in my mind about that. I did ask whether he meant to lecture the whole membership.

And I expressed my feelings same as he did that I don't like being scolded as part of a group when I haven't done anything in the same way I don't like a thread getting locked down because of someone's transgression.

I feel the way I do about wholesale scoldings about transgressions because it's never been effective in my experience in any group setting. Making the individual transgressors accountable does and that's what normally happens here.

Dang Artie - you must be some kind of a genius. I'm amazed that you gleaned and composed that, and particularly so well. I bet you are really good at whatever your job is, and are good at organizing cooperation. You'd have been a good founding father.

Being a member here is a bit daunting, and it takes a while to catch the drift. I've made many mistakes before pretty much getting my mind right. Once I did, I have a decent understanding of the tone Para is attempting to instill here. It has caused me to consider many aspects of life outside of here, and made me a better person, citizen and American.

There must be a reason Para wants members to catch his drift naturally, and I think that is what happened to me, and maybe had the most impact on me that way. But I don't think you spelling it out detracts from the mission.

This is one of THE most enjoyable gun forums on the net. Because it's run the way its run. And the quality of the posters here as well.

I wanted to get educated recently on Corvette's as I'm buying one of the new C8's. So went to the most popular Vette forum.

It's like being in Elementary School again at times. A treasure trove of information but one has to weed through FAR too many childish, snarky comments.

Within a week I had blocked THREE posters. One is WELL known as an asshole, yet somehow still allowed to post and denigrate people. They need a Par over there.

Thanks Para...This is Heaven.
