We have a 20 year old Whirlpool that works great. The lower rack, though, is about to fall apart from rust.

A replacement rack is $519! 5 - 1 - 9 damn dollars. For a wire rack!

I suspect they prefer we buy a new one

You might try https://partsdr.com/. I've consistently gotten better prices from them and fast, reasonable shipping.

I've had good luck with appliancepartspros.com.

Plenty of used appliance parts on eBay or find a complete unit with a good rack for $50 on Marketplace, CL, Offer Up, etc. and rob what you need and junk the rest.

Think I would invest in a new unit before dumping that kind of money in rusty 20 year old unit.

NEW Whirlpool dishwasher, $399 at Costco, the NEW dishwasher is $120 less expensive than replacing the rack on your old one:

I didn't check for your part, but have used appliancepartspros myself on several occasions, and they were reasonably-priced, good at shipping, maybe even overnight or next-day, IIRC.

How much do you think it cost to keep a dishwasher rack in inventory for the last 20 years? Let’s sat it was $40 to begin with. At 10% a year carrying costs, that would be a $269 dishwasher rack at the end of 20 years.

Given how terrible new dishwashers and clothes washers are at actually cleaning, keep what you have running if you can. I’ve replaced numerous small parts on my old school Whirlpool direct drive washer, it does use a bunch of water with each load, but the clothes are clean, and it doesn’t take a lifetime to wash them. Better yet, it’s repairable with a screwdriver and couple of wrenches, no electronics or WiFi connection needed.
