Do you realize that people outside your field may not understand them? I don't expect everybody to know what automotive acronyms like, for example, MIL, PCM, ECT or DPFE* mean. Say what you mean.

*Malfunction Indicator Lamp, Powertrain Control Module, Engine Coolant Temperature, Delta Pressure Feedback EGR (which in turn is Exhaust Gas Recirculation).

I remember years ago talking with my dad and his second wife about the kind of work I did, when I mentioned in passing, "hard disk crash."

The two of them looked at me with blank stares, as if I had just nuclear energy or something.

It was then I realized that one has to make sure one is aware of the listener's knowledge level about the subject matter at hand!

I have ranted on this subject myself. Many on this forum are guilty.

Thank you for bringing this up. It can be annoying when there are so many acronyms.

Totally agree with OP. It's not the everyday jargons and acronyms, but the ones in the specialized fields that should be spelled out, at least initially.

During one of our never ending stream of regulatory audits one auditor got a little panicky while reviewing downtime entries in our maintenance database where the cause of a pallet jam in the process was "due to POOP causing pallet to jam at PRS264".

POOP is was technician shorthand for "Parts Out Of Pallet" which will sometimes catch on the proximity sensors that track pallet movement though the machine and cause the pallet to jam.
