The 4WD on the Tundra is working again.

To be fair, that also includes changing the lube in both diffs and the transfer case, fluid and filter for the trans, oil and filter for the engine ($100 right there!) rotating the tires and slapping a new inspection sticker on it.

Also, that's about 1 payment on a new truck... Red Face

What was the problem with the 4wd inoperative? Even now out of the business, I'd still like to know.

It is the trade off with older cars. Paid off, but they can break. My son has a 20 year old Sequoia which causes him similar problems.

$558/year in repairs beats $558/month in truck payments.

Not to long ago I had a check engine light on for a day, went out on it’s own later. I didn’t pay much heed, then the son came over, wanted to look at the code reader.

The code reader had a handful of ‘low voltage’ indications, then something else related, giving the light. This all started pointing towards the truck battery, OEM, 2017 model year.

I thought it’s about time for a new battery, no waiting when I was driving by Wally-world. I did a slight upgrade, just let them put it in, checked later.

Anyway, my most recent maintenance experience.

Wasn't completely inoperative, but when shifting out of 4WD I'd get a blinking "4HI" light and a traction control light, indicating an incomplete shift. It actually WAS back in 2WD however. Internet advice was to shift in and out repeatedly until it freed up. Got to the point where it would clear if I shut the truck off and let it sit, but still wasn't right.

Not entirely sure what the problem was. Mechanic said the procedure based on the code it threw was to change the filter in the transmission.

Didn't get more details, but I'll ask next time I'm there, which will be soon. Getting ready to put the Vette away for the Winter and will take it in for an oil change.

Part of the reason for the bill was that two bolts broke when getting the pan off the transmission. That'll happen with steel bolts into an aluminum casting. BTDT.

That doesn't compute. I don't see what the transmission has to do with the transfer case. But if it works, take the win.

My suspicion is that pressure from the trans pump is used to cycle the shifter, but that's a wild guess at best. I'll see him this week and ask.

I miss the manual lever controlled 2wd / 4wd hi / 4wd low, in my 2004 Tundra and 2014 Wrangler.

I don't think any new truck can be bought for that payment any more, unless you run it out 8, 10, 12 or more years, which would be foolish in the extreme.

$100 for an oil change?!? Dang. How big is the pan on a Tundra? I'm still doing oil changes for about $25 on my Silverado and Suburban...5 quarts of 5W30 full synthetic from Walmart and a Delco filter. If that's what it costs to have a shop do it these days I'll definitely keep doing it myself. Easiest $75 I've ever made in 15 minutes!

0W20 Synthetic (not sure what brand) 6 quarts with filter I think. I'm sure he marked it up, but having a mechanic that I can trust is priceless and his hourly rate is low by local standards and WAY below stealerships.
