Sunday PM, left the gunshow, truck loaded,
once out of NOVA and south of Fredricksburg, running 80+ in just about any lane,
came up on some traffic, and some moron in a 4runner running 65 in the fast lane,
speed limit is 70


both idjits in the front seats had cell phones in there hands, guessing one speaker, since they were holding them in front of thier chins,

4runner was new enough to have bluetooth,


needless to say, some congestion whilst the folks like myself had to slow and merge over,



there is a road I travel every day, roughly 6 miles long
each end is in a neighborhood, so 35 mph,
the center is thru a park, speed limit is 45 (years ago, it was 55)
2 stops, both 4 ways,

just about everyone runs 40+ thru the neighborhoods, but for some reason these same folks will slow to 35 or so where it goes thru the park (speed 45) and then, when they get to the southern 4 way, slow and run it, then speed pu to 40+ in the 35mph zone,

cops rarely run speed checks on the 45 mph part, but often do on the 35 mph parts,

stupidity at its finest, and very frustrating to get behind

I had the pleasure of driving 13 hours to Florida today on I65. While I did encounter some of these clueless assholes (one zombie lady in a minivan going 55 in the left lane perfectly embodied CPD Sig's 2nd type), I also found some kindred spirits.

There was a dude in a red Silverado with an Indiana temp tag who ran together with me almost all the way through Kentucky. Dude kept a consistent speed of a few mph above the limit, signalled all his lane changes, maintained a reasonable following distance, stayed in the right lane whenever possible, and got over for disabled vehicles on the shoulder. If you're out there reading this, bud, it was a pleasure driving with you. Keep being awesome!

I drive I-40 about 25 miles each way daily for work. I typically keep my cruise set about 68-70 and stay in the right lane, but when I have to get over and pass I'll gas it and go on around til I can get back over.
I'm going home one morning last week and ran up on a truck running 45 in the slow lane with no tail lights. Damn near got me. I get that he was in the slow lane, but if you can't get reasonably close to the speed limit then get the hell off the interstate!

Not as bad as it was the last time I drove it, but there's still some construction. I got excited when we entered Tennessee because I thought they'd finally made it 3 lane all the way to Nashville, but my exuberance was premature...it dropped back down to two within a few miles. That stretch north of Nashville is the worst, especially northbound. Just not enough room for all the vehicles.

Honestly, the worst part of the trip yesterday was 465 around Indy. They have a ton of construction going on, it snowed and left icy slush packed to their stupid concrete road surface, and INDOT was way behind the ball on getting it cleaned off. A few incompetent morons managed to lose it and crash out, which just made the problem worse.

After we got out of that mess it was pretty smooth sailing. We got stopped briefly in Louisville, and backed up pretty bad south of Birmingham because there were two oversized loads pulling both halves of a double-wide blocking the whole road through a construction zone, but other than that we made pretty good time. 880 miles in 13 hours. Only stopped twice for gas.

Well, @ 75 I AM a FOP, but I'm right there with you. The 7 figure RV lobby must be incredible, it's the only way I can see getting away with driving that big of a vehicle (often based on actual semi tractors) without a CDL and massive road taxes. Often driven by someone who's questionable at best in a Corolla FFS.

We get a lot of ag equipment on the roads during certain times of the year. Those big sprayers with the tall, skinny tires are a summer staple, and while I've never done it the temptation always existed to squirt under them when I was on the bike !

Black top, with deer ,turkey, racoon, possum, skunk
every 600 feet.

Long ago I moved here from Maricopa county.

I shared your frustration.

Then I started meeting those people in person .

One 77 y.o. lady has one patially working eye, with
age related diminished response .

Another is a Korean war vet with four
physical maladies and again
dimished response abilities.

And three others with similar handicaps.

So one day ,(20 years ago)
I decided that I am no more or less important
than anyone else and if tolerance
Is all that I have to offer those that are
less fortunate. So be it.

If they can take time to make time, so can I.

Everybody is faced with challenges in a daily basis
.

A good guy would applaud them for taking the
initiative to get by on their own without
dependance on others.

A great fellow would offer to drive them on their errands
once a week to lighten their load.

I am sure they are well aware of some view them and
their driving abilities .

I believe the reason is that the slow driver has reached the upper limit of the driver's mental capacity and capability.

This occurs when inputs overwhelm processing capacity. Phone use, map use, audible "uploads," unfamiliarity with route, etc. add mental load. Driving drops to subordinate level, and thankfully the brain slows down the driving to keep those inputs from overwhelming the person.

Bad decisions can be made as a result.

Very interesting thread. I see younger folks distracted with their phones, women talking or applying makeup, or god knows what else, and those cars modified with fart pipes just itching to be first in line. I wonder how pleasant driving might be everyone slowed down to close to the posted limit, put their phones down, left a few minutes earlier, or in general tried driving a bit more responsibly without taunting and tailgating. We re all on a mission, and want to arrive alive. I have often thought that after a certain age we would all benefit from having to demonstrate competency like pilots do every two years or so. Just remember we are all in this together folks.

Me, I get road rage walking behind people walking too slow.

I think every Prius driver is this area must have had to sign an agreement that they will always drive in the left lane 5 miles below the speed limit before they could purchase their car.

Well said. My dad is in his 80s. Very independent, but slower now than in the days when he was a Corvette owner. I have cursed many a slow driver, but I now try very hard to treat the slow pokes how I would like him to be treated.

I live just north of Tucson where the roads were built for the future. Most major roads are 2-3 lanes with turn lanes. Most posted speeds are 45-55. Add about 10 to this and that’s the pace. Little police presence.

Many years ago when I was still working, a few fire chiefs from NYC came to Phx. When they saw the size of Phx streets and how fast people drove it shocked them.
Their experience was on narrow city streets jammed with traffic. Out in the West, where there always seems to be space to expand, it amazed them.
Our fire chief told them, “Well now you know why we have so much experience with vehicle extrication. Two cars meeting at 50mph bends stuff.”

I75 near cincy driving 55 in a 65. Two twenty-somethings, hands 10 & 2, staring forward…hhhmmm stoned. Of course it effects all three lanes.
