This has always been perplexing and annoying but I'm reaching a limit in patience.

Windows updates occur frequently (at least monthly? Not the weekly security patches but the OS level stuff - month 25H2 release type stuff).

Often, the update status will just stall. Like the update status will be 17% complete and just stay there for minutes - 10 or more? But the CPU, disk and network utilization are all basically zero; well CPU may be reading less than 10%.

WTF is windows doing? According to task manager, nothing seems to be going on and the status just remains static for long periods of time. Do something! Get it done! Annoying as hell.

Oh oh, and I forgot the pleasure of the update process continuing / stalling trying to shutdown. Then again when it's booting. Hate windows. I'll be glad to be off it soon. Good riddance.

The main reason I went with a MacBook? To get rid of the frequent (and seemingly pointless) Windows updates. They were a PITA.

The effects of updates were a big reason I moved to Ubuntu and PopOS from Windows. Both pretty much 'just work' and updates to both are simpler and completely under my control.

Yea, when Ubuntu updates, including FW, get pushed, it's very quick. Start to complete is generally faster than downloading a win update, let alone the installation, shutdown and reboot for updates.

Same. 2014. Haven’t looked back. Zero bullshit to deal with. Yes Mac OS updates a few times a year, but it’s painless. Yep, update and restart you POS. I just leave, come back 30 minutes later, and it’s all handled. Steak tastes better than a cheeseburger.

How old is your computer? What OS are you using?

Old computers with old operating systems can't keep up with the modern internet. Data transfer is massive and fast.

I had an old Sony smart tv and was getting updates several times a day. The old girl's computer just couldn't keep up. I recently replaced it with a Samsung and no more updates.

Brand new laptop, 14 core processor, nvme SSD, 1 gig WiFi with 800mbps to the laptop, and Win 11 Pro: 3 hours from turning it on to getting it fully updated and running. Another 3 hours to get the pictures, documents, and settings from the old Win 10 machine to the new one and I even had and external hard drive. The first hour was spent trying to get the supposedly super simple built in transfer software to work.

This is really my only gripe with Windows at this point. Getting a new computer shouldn’t require reinstalling all your software. At one point, I played with converting the old computers to virtual machines which worked, but I’ve long since forgotten how.

I don’t get along with Macs. I crashed the first one I ever used within 30 seconds of touching it. I went to the Apple Store with home videos of my kids on a DVD all set to buy one. I asked them to show me how easy editing the videos would be on a Mac and they could not. Apparently, my camera recorded video in an industry standard format Macs couldn’t use at the time some 15 years ago.

I had the recent joy of an Update followed by a reboot upon which my USBc ports no longer worked. Which means no external monitor or wired internet.

PANIC!

Luckily, my Ubuntu PC was still fine and healthy. I searched for possible issues and resolutions and found something that worked. So, I need a Ubuntu or Mac around so that I can get friggin Win PC fixed when it breaks....

I like the concept of one stop shop in Apple ecosystem - HW, Drivers, OS - Apple. The alternative is OS separate from HW separate from system config (OEM and model specific). It's amazing it works even some of the time.
