The Word "But"
The use of this word drives me nuts!!

Do people realize the way they use the word "but" typically negates everything said before that word?

"I don't want to delay you but..."

"I love you but..."

"Your company's process is good but..."

Drives me frickin nuts when people cannot hear that and its meaning when used.

(Yes, in a meeting with a Supplier and hearing this word used on my side, except for the "love" part noted above. There is no love with this Supplier.)

The 'but' monkey is almost as annoying as the 'may, or may not' non committal phrase.

I hate both of them.

Technically, this complaint is valid, but you know that people are using it to soften some bad news, make a complaint, or express a contrary opinion, so it is to be expected.

I can neither confirm nor deny I use the term.

But I find it useful.

There are two modern uses of “so”. At the beginning of a reply and at the end of a soft demand.

I noticed it at the beginning of a reply for the first time at children’s hospital. All the young doctors use “So,” to start a reply. Every time. I think it’s a modern version of “uhh,”.

I noticed it at the end of a demand with my step-daughter. “I’m going to need a ride immediately. So …”. Never worked but it was still employed.

My favorite use of this word was in this sentence said to me.

Yes, people know the word “but” negates everything said prior to the word but what’s your problem?

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

It doesn't negate what's said before it... it means "in spite of that" or apologizes in advance.

"I love you but you're wrong on this one." That doesn't mean you're wrong so I no longer love you. It means I love you anyways.
