Central Texas Dachsund Rescue has some senior doxies. Maybe there is something similar in Kentucky. I usually donate to CTDR at the Weiner Dog races in April.

Seeing as how I've had several cats reach 20 years old, and I am currently mid-60's with bad health and am reasonably sure I'll not make it to mid-80's, having a cat outlive me is one of my concerns also! The two that I have now (ages 8 and 6) should be okay, but if I were to lose them both while still in reasonable health (reasonable for me that is), I would either choose an elderly cat, or remain without any more. Not looking forward to making that decision!

My wife is doing okay and likely will outlive me by at least 10 years, but our oldest kitty is "Daddy's girl" and howls every time I walk out the door. She is miserable whenever I leave for a week to visit our daughter in Georgia (we always go one at a time so somebody is home to care for the babies), so I cannot imagine how she would be if I left for good!

FWIW, I didn't train her to wake me, it started right after we brought her home. She was nearly feral. She'd been living in a lockdown dementia unit for old people. When I went to visit, she would amaze the staff by sitting on my lap. I started bringing a brush with me. When my wife's relative died, the staff begged us to take her home with us. We did. She's still not good around strangers, and has gotten into scraps with so many other animals I mostly keep her inside now. She once needed six abdominal staples when attacked by a predatory bird. (She's very small, less than six pounds.) No front claws, but we didn't do that and wouldn't have.

I am sure there are older cats that many will not readily adopt, and that would be a purrfect fit for you.

And do not hesitate to work with whomever "supplies" such cats, an agreement that should the cat outlive you, that they will take the cat back and care for it with the intent to find it a new home.

Cats, being cats, can and will adapt, even if they remain aloof in the new place, or become a "needy" cat, that takes over everything.

All dogs go to heaven but all cats, cat.

And no cat, cat's incorrectly.

Matilda is 83 now,
She has a 6 pound min. Fox terrior .
It's 8 y.o.

Lately ,Matilda finds it very nessicary that the dog goes with her on errands, for some reason.

She would always leave the dog home alone for three or four hours, now she crates it and it goes with her ,the majority of the time.

I am turning 75 this month and am a widower (wife passed in 2017). One of our two cats passed in 2020. I currently have one cat and two German Shepherds. Once they pass, I do not plan on acquiring any new pets since it would not be fair to them; I would worry about their care when I pass. I have provided for my current pets as part of my estate planning.

Volunteering at a local shelter is a way to enjoy the animals without the responsibilitys of ownership. Helping socialize and exercise the older and smaller dogs that are easier to handle. Our local shelter is starting a temporary foster program to get some animals out of the kennel environment over the holidays. Most organizations are grateful for any help they can get.

Fostering can be wonderful and temporary. I struggle with it because I’ve always ended up adopting the unadoptables. Had to take a break, but I may go back to it someday.
I think everyone should have a pet. Something that keeps your secrets and loves you unconditionally (as best they can, of course- I took in a frog of all things, and who knew? I’ve gotten attached to the damn thing. It choruses almost every day for me, and turns to me whenever I walk by it’s enclosure).

That's my problem also! Would love to volunteer at my favorite local shelter/thrift store, but would be way too tempted to bring home more kitties! I simply cannot be around them if they don't have homes without falling in love with them.
