I got a haircut today.
The lady does a great job. This is maybe the fourth time I've had this particular one cut my hair, and it's been consistent. Today, she did something new.

Now... like most guys who hit age 40, I have less hair than I did a decade ago, but I've been lucky. It recessed rapidly for a while and then stopped cold. I still have a respectable hairline, and in the past few years, what had thinned out a lot came back after dealing with some health stuff. But in that process, there were a few hairs that stuck it out while their buddies retreated. Maybe a half dozen or so, only conspicuous if I'm really looking for them, are clearly not with the rest of my hairline. I leave them be. I figure their loyalty shouldn't be punished with plucking or trimming, and besides, I'm not a vain person. I leave them be... perhaps by way of hoping that if I leave the last vestages of the rear guard intact, the rest won't go ahead and fuck right off.

My father had a clearly defined island of hair on the front of his head by the time he was forty. I've got him handily beat so far. Some day, I might have a John Dillinger-esque hairline going on, and I've decided there's worse fates, right?

I keep relatively clean fade most of the time, higher in the summer and lower in the winter. Just a fairly classic man's haircut. Well, today, while she was cleaning a few things up, I felt clippers in a place I didn't expect them. That's right, she lined up my hairline. At first, it was just the loyal stragglers, but then... well... she got what was left of my lopsided widow's peak.

Guys. I had a black barber who did my hair with a comb and a straight razor and nothing else last year that told me "I'd normally line up a brother's hairline, but it doesn't look to swift on white dudes, so I'mma leave yours alone. That good with you?" I chuckled and said that was fine. You know what? He was right. That stubble at my widow's peak? It's like a fucking glowing neon sign lol.

I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed, to drop the classic dad line. Next time, I'll ask her not to touch up the front. Big Grin

Been there.
I've been cutting my own for about 25 years now, and during the first couple years I learned the hard way of trying to straighten my widow's peak by hitting it with a 0.
Watching it grow out to a stubble made me shave it down again a bunch more times until I finally sucked it up and let it grow out.

Yeah, I’m gonna let it grow back. Shouldn’t take take long, my hair grows quickly and I keep it short. Really wish that black barber hadn’t moved away. That was the best cut I’ve ever had, but he wasn’t anywhere near as cute as this lady so I guess I’ll live lol. Big Grin

You only get one hair cut?

That's quite the comb over... Razz

Takes a lot of pomade, and a lot of patience.

That's a lot cheaper. I tried cutting my own, it kept coming out too short and really shiny.

Love a good Dean Martin skit, I don't think I've seen him keep a straight face through one yet. Big Grin

rizzle - That was a great video.

We passed through your fine town last week on our way to Apple Annies. Nice road trip.

Glad you had fun there, not to many drive 3 hours to see it Smile. No big city life here, laid back and quiet.

I just hit 40 and gave up on hair a long time ago. While I still have a full head and a hairline that hasn't moved since I first got hair, I still buzz the whole thing while bending over my bathroom sink. Electric clippers, no guard. No styling, combing, washing, hat hair, blah blah. I have enough crap to worry about.

Instead of 7 and a half week intervals , I went to 4 and a half week appts.

You see, the Roly poly 78 y.o. tiny town barber retired.

And a 36 y.o. gal opened up a shop. The conversation is new and different, the view is much better, the clientele is different.

She uses clippers instead of scissors, and no straight razor on the side burns or neck, but no one is pointing at me and laughing, so.

I had to get used to making an appt. but it was a cinch.

When I lived in Portland I had the same barber for 44 years. He knew exactly what I wanted. I could just walk in whenever I felt the need, as long as it was before about 3:30 PM on one of the three days he worked each week. Since moving here a year ago it's different. Gotta make an appointment now.

I've had the same haircut ever since I left the Navy some 40 years ago.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I've got the opposite problem. I have, if anything, too much hair. I hadn't had it cut in several weeks, so I went in. Had the beard trimmed back to a #6, touched up the sides. The problem with really thick hair, and by thick I mean dense and coarse, is it will not lay down. It's pretty bad when a strand of hair several inches long stands straight up, and sometimes more than one. At least it's not red anymore. For several years I shaved but had a Fu, and was often called Yosemite Sam.

I - and the people who cut it - have the same problem.

My elderly Korean barber cut most of my hairs yesterday.

I’ve tried explaining “not so short” but he doesn’t seem to grasp the idea.

Still, the best barber I’ve had in 30 years.

He moved shortly after I got here. Par for the course with me. I get lots of mediocre to crappy haircuts and then find someone who really knows what they're doing and then they disappear after a few haircuts.

There's a number of smaller barber shops in the little older town I'm on the border of. I drove past a handful yesterday I think I'll check out next time.
