Classrooms of students who are actively engaged in their own learning are effective for students at all levels." I do not have any idea of what this means. P. Put the kids in groups so the smarter kids can carry the work of everybody so everybody gets better grades with less effort put forth by the teachers. In Atlanta, just changing the grades while nobody was looking was a better idea for quite some time. | |||

Group work. It will surely involve creating groups that include students of differing abilities and backgrounds. Instead of writing individual papers there will be group projects and grades will be earned collectively. The smart kids will inevitably carry the weight and be told it’s fair and they should develop empathy. When questioned the administration will point to teams working on projects in corporate America disregarding the differences between school and corporations. Ask the teachers “if your job was on the line would you choose a team composed of the best students or a team created to meet other goals?” You’ll get a stammer and a red face and then some half composed bullshit. | |||

In Project Based Learning there are both group grades and individual grades. If done correctly the individual students grade should reflect their effort and ability. I personally hate group work and projects but it does have a place on occasion. I am thankful that my education did not include group projects. I did have a lab partner for Chemistry but that is about it. | |||

Project based learning. Best example might be the movie School Of Rock with Jack Black. Not everyone can be in the band but, the band also needs marketing, financial management, and other aspects to be successful. These are project which the individual cannot do but the group can. Take the band example and apply it to "let's send a person to Mars" project (or more likely "let's fix climate change. Okay Billy, you first; are there any [evil] guns in your house? When I was a sophomore in high school in the nearly '60's, my Plane Geometry teacher, Mrs. Hill, used a "group" self-teaching thing for half the classroom time: for the second half of plane geometry class, we divided into groups of 6 and went to the blackboard to work assigned problems for homework. For a few weeks I did my job and worked all the exercises for "my" group of football players who chatted about last Friday's game and paid no attention. My buddy and the teachers daughter did the same for their groups. The teacher graded papers or whatever then glanced at the groups' work. My BFF and I finally got tired of this BS and just stopped working the exercises that we already knew for students who weren't interested. We both got a "C" for the 6 week grade: she said WE only worked for half the class time, A's on the tests and homework but F's on the group work equals a C. We went to the principal who was also a math teacher and knew us from his class. We didn't get our grades changed as we demanded but the group circle jerks stopped immediately. 60 years later I clearly remember that 6 weeks and the C on my card. Mrs. Hill never liked me after that and her daughter "became" a lesbian while still in high school, but that's another story. | |||

I think she means hands on projects which are a great learning tool. Some schools have outdoor projects where they plant a garden, raise fish from fingers and later release them in streams, do biology of steams health by testing water, catch and identifying stream animal and plant life, etc. In college, some of the best courses in learning are labs and building projects so why not start it in schools. Some schools are already doing this and it captures the student's interest and they work harder. 41 | |||

Which I believe is exactly what people that think Left strive for - being vague. I've noticed, at least in myself in the past, that if someone's statement lacked specificity I would tend to give them the benefit of the doubt and interpret what they were saying in the way that made the most sense to me. Time and experience, though, has shown that logic to be incorrect. Now if something appears to me to be vague or unnecessarily wordy/complicated, whatever the subject is will not receive my support until specifics are received and clarity is achieved as to intent and desired outcome. | |||
