Apparently my bank account was hacked?
I keep seeing these posts. NEVER use a debt card, pay all bills thru your bank. Use cash only & a credit card when cash is not appropriate such as online. I never use a card at restaurants. Still, I have a credit card hacked at least once a year from online purchases.

Get a credit card that lets you create a Virtual Number. That’s a one time use only number for only a one time purchase transaction online.

My Capitol One Credit card has this feature. I like that a lot.

I highly recommend you have money at 2 different financial institutions. I learned the hard way when one was hacked and I could not use it for awhile.

Now, if one gets screwed up, I have money at a different one so that I have access to sufficient funds for at least 40 days of money as I need, plus some extra cushion.

Good luck to you.

I seldom write checks most are drafts in my account. When I have to mail a check I go inside the post office. Very secure.

If it makes you feel any better, I use my debit card only to get cash from my bank's ATM. I write one check a month only to a trusted group. I do have automatic payments coming out of my checking account for various stuffs like credit card payments. I use a credit union.

But last month, I got a legitimate email from my credit union saying a recent external account I set up had incorrect information and was denied. I haven't set up an external account in years so I called. They then closed my checking account and gave me a new one.

I had to reestablish all my auto payments again; good thing I maintain records of what gets paid from what account. I still managed to get some late payment fees or bounced payment fees but I was able to talk to those accounts and my credit union reimbursed me for the bounced check fee that my check caused. My credit union also paid for the new checks I had to order.

I've had the same checking account for over 20 years and this is the first time its happened.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I was actually expecting to have to do a whole new account and changing all my payment stuff. That's actually the reason I took off work today lol.

I agree. The difference being Credit Onions are owned, operated and "boarded" by members.

They typically have very tight controls and some of the best interactions with members, as they see the members as more than a "customer/number" that floats the bottom line in a sea of green.

The military had me all over the world and I had the same Credit Union account since the 70s, as well as bank accounts at all my duty stations to manage local financial banking/checking needs.

I have never, and I do mean absolutely never, had any trouble with quick, and friendly resolution to any problem with the Credit Union (less than a dozen in all these years). But I have had more problems with banks than I can count, and almost always, resulted in me eventually leaving to find another bank when possible/practical. In some cases, there was only one bank in the overseas assignment, so I had to tough it out.

I have been contacted by the Credit Union when making more than one transaction when out of town to verify I was making the charges, and had was asked to verify the amount on them. Had I not been able to they would lock the card.

I also was out of ton and making a substantial (over a thousand dollars) purchase, and it declined. I called them and they made an exception and the charge was made while on the phone. (all of this with me giving them verifiable information, passcode, challenge questions/answers.

I never suffered loss, nor had to pay any fees or charges, and have also been able to reverse a few purchases when disputed online that a vendor had not resolved to my satisfaction (and using my debit card).

Overall, the Credit Onions get a 10, banks a solid 3.

YMMV

*Oh, yeah. (to others) Open a CU account, but keep the bank account open until the problem is resolved, is a given. I did not think about making that statement as it is just obvious to me, but it is a good point. Smile

Another update. Cool
As of yesterday afternoon I do have all the money back in my account. I am still waiting for my replacement card, hopefully it will be this wèek. I was expecting to need another new card and possibly the whole new account thing and whatnot but thankfully that was not necessary. Big Grin
