Thanks Iran and China.
My vacation that was supposed to start Friday night has now involved me working every night until Wednesday from 7pm to 5 am.

I will lose my vacation days without compensation.

Good thing my finger isn't on the nuke button!

Mad

Seriously, what kind of company makes you go to work for an emergency on your vacation and says, "sorry, you were working on your vacation. Tough."

Either they're going to comp you your vacation days at a future date either on or off the books or you're getting paid at least time and a half during your vacation if you're a wage slave.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

One of the big three banks.
With a new manager trying to prove his value to the Corp.

Year end reviews are coming.

I expect some SERIOUS monetary compensation or my direction will be changing drastically.

Well, it has been what, 9 days? If he was really worth something, he would have done something long before Friday.

Sorry to hear about your vacation. They should make an exception for carry-over because of the last-minute cancellation.

All I can say is wow! I would think they would have you work in exchange for 2x future vacation time or something else. Otherwise I'd say sorry, no can do, my time off was approved in advance. Good luck with your situation.

I agree. I can't imagine continuing to work somewhere that pulled a stunt like that. It's not like you chose to not use your vacation days, you had a plan to use them, but put the company first. You should be compensated for that.

That is complete bullshit

If I were you, I'd be making a call to the Texas Office of Labor

They can't fuck you like that and get away with it.

A software development company that I worked for was going to confiscate my accrued vacation time.

A lawyer friend in the BMW Motorcycle club that I belonged to sent them a letter.

FedEx showed up the day after the company received the letter. There was a check for all of the accrued vacation time in the FedEx letter pack.

That's subject to the laws of your state, and your ability to negotiate. You are in a great position to negotiate, with the work ahead of you and the scheduled vacation on the books.

Your boss can take care of this either officially, i.e. waiving any policies and regranting, or granting a one time bonus of an amount that will make you happy, or unofficially (agreeing to mark you present when you take an equivalent number of days off in the future).

But no way, if there was an ultra-officious boss insisting on losing my vacation, would I put finger one on keyboard till the understanding was documented. "Sorry, this line is noisy, it sounded like you want to remove my earned vacation in violation of company policies and state labor laws. Could you please get to a place with a better signal and call back later?"

So, what happened with this. Did they really take your vacation days and not compensate you?

I have had companies do similar to employees with the excuse of the “system cannot handle it” blah blah.

So when I was managing folks I would simply give them whatever days they needed whenever as long as they cleared it with me and somehow my “system” handled it fine.

It’s simple shit like this that REALLY pisses people off. All it takes is a simple “hey this is an emergency situation but I will take care of you when it passes” whether through legit channels or on the down low.

If you are classified as salaried exempt, you do not get overtime. The rules by which salaried people are classified as non-exempt and exempt are Federal, and I've seen a lot of "interpretation" by HR people.

I am classified as exempt and there is no system for exempt people to log time, absences, or vacation, nor is there a vacation approval process. All of that is between you and your boss. The corporate policy is no vacation carryover and no payout of unused vacation. A decent boss would look at this situation and work something out on the side.

If you are salaried non-exempt or hourly then the rules change.
