So stopped by Sportsman’s Warehouse tonight to get some 10mm carry ammo. Looking around the store and there’s only one end cap with any ammo. WTF this can’t be right? Then notice, most of it is now behind the counter.

So now instead of being able to browse and compare at my leisure, I need a clerk to retrieve it. To make it even worse the 10mm loadings were in 5 different spots on the shelves. The clerk said the move was made because they were losing too much due to shoplifting. I get it, but it’s still a pain in the ass.

I was in the Sportsman's Warehouse near you in December and it was all out on shelves.

Moving it behind the counter sucks, makes it difficult to browse, find what you are looking for, as well as something new.

We did go by the tea/coffee shop where your photographs were on display last year. Interesting employee behind the counter wearing a coonskin cap.

To me it is still much easier to browse behind the counter than if it has walked out the door without compensation.
Not a big deal to visually scan and then request what I want, or want to look at.

From the ATF website:
Does a customer have to be a certain age to buy firearms or ammunition from a licensee?

Yes. Under the Gun Control Act (GCA), shotguns and rifles, and ammunition for shotguns or rifles may be sold only to individuals 18 years of age or older. All firearms other than shotguns and rifles, and all ammunition other than ammunition for shotguns or rifles may be sold only to individuals 21 years of age or older. Licensees are bound by the minimum age requirements established by the GCA regardless of state or local law. However, if state law or local ordinances establish a higher minimum age for the purchase or disposition of firearms, the licensee must observe the higher age requirement.

[18 U.S.C. 922(b)(1) and (b)(2); 27 CFR 478.99(b)]

I was at a Sportsman's Warehouse a couple of days ago, ammo is still out on the shelves at that store.

Going to another SW tomorrow, I'll check there. (Have a gift card that is itching to be spent Smile)

The two stores in Vegas have moved alot of the higher quality handgun and rifle ammo to way behind the counter as well. Makes it very difficult to even see the caliber markings on the boxes, let alone any further details like price, velocity, bullet weight etc and make any comparisons.
I think if theft was such a problem, a better solution should have been looked for.

It sounds like you don't believe that theft IS a problem. I can't speak for those specific SW stores, but I can tell it's an issue with OUR gun shop in our neck of the woods. As a retail business, we're certainly open to any ideas that you think would be better for the buyer AND still allow us to secure product from shoplifters without adding significant overhead costs in order to achieve this.

It’s a new thing and still in progress. Be interesting to see if their store in Wasilla is doing something similar.

Academy, BassPro (Cabela's), Dunhams and a local shop called Mahoney's still have it on open shelves. (The latter two do lock up the premium ammo, and Academy puts RFID tags on it.)

Just went to the other Sportsman's Warehouse near me this morning, bought a Glock 42. Ammo was out on the shelves at this store too.

Must be a regional or store-by-store, thing.
