For some time I've enjoyed watching Bosch and similar series on Prime Video, the app on my Apple TV.

All apps but Amazon Prime will dutifully exit when you depress the "back" arrow button repeatedly. Not Amazon Prime.

I find myself cursing at the app as I try to remember the exact sequence of steps to get the "back" arrow to return me to the main Apple TV menu.

I'm sure a programmer was gleeful when he created this nonsense, thinking it would keep me in the app out of frustration. Nope. It just makes me more determined NOT to use Amazon Prime Video.

Push and hold the Back button to bail out of the Amazon app.

I don't use AppleTV, but does it not have a "home" button?

All the other smart TVS and smart boxes I've used all have that. One press and you're back to the main software menu.
