Back in the middle of November, my 2015 Silverado 1500 transmission went out at 130,000 miles. Cost me $7,000.00 Now as if that's not bad enough apparently that fuse/electrical box that sits on top of the battery has a short in it, and the Dealership says they can't find one anywhere. I guess I'll have to call around and see if I can find one at a junkyard somewhere.

It’s not just Chevy, pretty much all new trucks are not as reliable and can’t handle mileage. It’s all the tech that’s jammed in, cylinder deactivation, engine start stop. 10 speeds transmissions are shifting so much to stay fuel efficient. Triple and quadruple climate.

After repeated drive train problems with Silverados from 2011-2017 I bought a 2020 Tundra and have never looked back. So much better constructed. increasingly GM has attempted to compensate for design failings of their trucks with electronics, which is a recipe for failure. _________________________ NRA Endowment Member _________________________ "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. Sad to hear Phil. I'm not sure what new truck now IS durable, long term, though? Used to be Toyota but not today. Is Ford or Stelantis any better? No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Why does it have to be "new"? Lightly used 2020 Tundras aren't hard to find. _________________________ NRA Endowment Member _________________________ "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. I guess the part itself is a “bus bar”. I found it on amazon. Hell it’s only about $35.00. I’ll check with the dealership tomorrow about installing a part that I’ll supply.

I have spent $10K to keep a 2013 GMC Sierra going. I am tempted to go Toyota. ------- Trying to simplify my life...

Did that a long time ago and haven't been disappointed yet. I was tired of spending my time fixing Ford, GM, and Chevy vehicles. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. Well I took a picture of the bus bar and went to the chevy dealer. When I got there they said that they hated to do it but they were going to have to order the part from ebay. I asked if the picture i had was the part in question. They confirmed and said if i ordered the part they would install it and cut me a deal since my truck has been sitting there for like 3 weeks

Little ray of sunshine |
This is apparently a widespread problem with GM trucks. My brother had to buy a new transmission for his 2017 1500. I have a buddy with a Cadillac SUV that needed a new transmission about a year after he bought it. It is about five years old now, if I remember right. GM is screwing something up. I was done with them about 2006. If it has AFM/DOD, have you had to fix that yet?

AFM/DOD......I had to look that up and see what it was. No I haven't had to fix that yet. I should get the $35 Buss Bar today. As soon as I get it, it goes to the Chevy dealer for installation.

I had one single domestic product, a Ford, and I swore off the Detroit 3 after that. Had more issues in too quick of a timeframe than I wanted to deal with. I got that bad feeling for long term ownership. I stick to the Japanese and prefer JDM built but I own 2 currently that were built in the US. Never had any major issues. One of those 2 is a compact truck and there is a recall on it but it’s just a fuel pump propeller. It’s out of warranty at this point and they are still replacing the thing for free. I’m thankful I bought mine in 2019. Price has gone up $10k for the exact same trim. It’s just nucking futz how expensive new vehicles are today. Even base economy Japanese cars like a Civic or Corolla are pushing $30k for MSRP. Full size truck, $60k. I remember when you could buy a Porsche Cayman for $60k and now that’s the defacto standard MSRP for any full size truck with some options. You want loaded this and that, might be $80k. And I see paper plate brand new versions on the road constantly. They must make double what I make or in debt up to the their asses. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

Fighting the good fight |
Moreso the latter. There are a LOT of people out there who toss a huge percentage of their monthly take home pay towards just making payments on a rapidly depreciating asset. (Or worse, they lease it and have nothing to show for it after throwing slightly less money each month at it for years.)

Which will need a transmission or other major work for another 6 grand, or have the frame rust out, before it is even paid for.

A used Tundra V8 might be as good of choice as any but keep in mind they are gas hogs, and the newer V8's are not the same bullet proof design as the ones they used to manufacture that would routinely go 300-400,000 miles. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

I agree with you. It’s them with the ego, image, status, superficiality, Joneses race, etc. Financially it would be cheaper to own 2 vehicles honestly. A daily driver or commuter is just that. A solid daily is a regular Corolla hatch, Civic, A Fit when they made that. Basically an economy class car. Buy one, drive it, maintain it, and when it’s paid off, well then go buy your performance car, luxury car, or fancy truck. With 2 vehicles you gain redundancy in case of a stoppage. And since you are spreading mileage out on the ODO’s you’ll get more time out of both. Expensive stuff should be bought for long term usage, 10+ years. If you buy something expensive, rack a bunch of miles on it, then it’s exactly like you said, it won’t be worth anything. And in many cases, these same people we are referring to, want something equally or more expensive in 2-3 years, trade it in, and they are upside down on it due to depreciation, mileage, etc, and roll that debt onto a new loan adding to it. It’s a never ending cycle. I have a number of vehicles, each bought at a time. Pay it off, keep it, and move onto the next piece of the fleet. I’m up to 8, with plans for 2 more. Meanwhile I’m driving the same daily driver hatchback for 11 years. If you ask these same people to drive the same thing for longer than 2-3 years they’d go nuts. What am I doing?
