Similar issue. Mid '70s, senior year of college and just got a car. I applied for a BankAmericard (forerunner of VISA) and was turned down due to lack of income. IIRC, I got two gas credit cards. After a year or two and my income went up a little bit, and with the good credit from the gas cards, I could get a mainstream credit card.

USAA turned me down for insurance about the same timeframe as I was enlisted, not an officer. I've been raspberrying them since then as well.
A Porsche salesman in Birmingham gave me a little bit of snarkiness and attitude when 20yo me was looking/dreaming at a 928 circa early 80's. I showed them by buying a Porsche in AZ 30 years later!
