What do cigarette butts and dental flossers have in common?
Their users (some, anyway) believe that the proper method of disposing them after use is to just drop them on the ground.

The cigarette butts I can sort of understand. If you don’t care about yourself, it’s less likely you’ll care about the community at large. But those little plastic dental flossers? I find them on the ground all over the place, and that’s more of a puzzle. What’s the thinking? “I am concerned enough about my teeth health to whip out a flosser as I’m walking down the street, but I certainly don’t want to carry the thing to the nearest trash container, so I’ll just leave it here for archaeologists to find in a couple of millenniums”—is that it?

Actually smokers in general have gotten much better about not littering the landscape with evidence of their habit, but sometimes I think I see as many, if not more, flossers scattered around. What’s the deal?

I hadn't thought about it before, but now I'm curious: where do you see so many flossers lying around?
'Cause frankly, I see them all the time in the parking lot at "The Walmart."

So, why do ya s'pose so many people suddenly care about their dental hygiene when doing their Wallying? Confused

God bless America.

What really caught my attention was on a local county site where my agency’s shooting range is located. In previous years some contractors were given permission to park their RVs there while working on local roads during the summer. Those people were a bunch of slobs, so that wasn’t too surprising other than the fact that they were also concerned about dental health.

But I see them on the streets and sidewalks of my small town, and when I go to more populated areas they’re commonly lying around parking lots. I suppose there’s some confirmation bias at work when I notice them and perhaps there aren’t as many as I think, but it’s still puzzling. Why them? “Oooh, ick! I had that in my mouth: get rid of it.”

I've noticed them too. It seems like every time I'm walking through a parking lot, I see them strewn on the ground.

Society seems to be devolving as far as this stuff goes.

Someone left a nasty full diaper laying on the field 10 feet from a trash can at my son's soccer practice field.

It's not all uncommon now to see people just throw their trash out the car window after eating a bag of fast food.

Smoking..put out butt. Walk to closest trash can, toss in totally extinguished butt /done.

Never heard of flossers flinging floss everywhere.

It’s our current state of the country. I see shit meal bags and drink containers left all the time in the parking lots. If I see anything the most frequent it’s that. Taco Hell, Jack in the Crack, name it. Bag and drink, left hand side of a parking space like they kicked it out of the floor panel.

Let us not forget the fucktards who spit their wad of chewing gum out on the sidewalk or parking lot.

Yesterday I saw a woman in McDonalds pull a stick of deodorant from her purse, reach thru her collar and apply it to her pits. Nasty.

I thought about the OP's response, and figured, maybe a regional or weird type of substance abuse thing.....

Then today, at my local grocery store, as I was walking in, I looked down and saw some sort of flossing tool, and thought, WTF?

I'm not sure what it is, but it is an utter lack of respect. And stupid. Throw it away.

I see them everywhere and have wondered the same thing, "Is there some drug related use I'm not aware of?"

Cigarette buts and discarded vape garbage, yeah I guess it's a personality type. Never would have guessed that people so concerned with dental hygiene that they have to floss on the go would be that same type. Confused

Still better than not using it at all.

I think people are expecting too much from our fellow human beings. People have always been trashy and selfish. We dig up their old trash from centuries ago. Crap strewn all over the place. Practically everything is disposable anymore. Turd worlders flooding in who have never cared and see no issue with dropping garbage. Maybe we need no littering pop ups on tic tok and Facebook.

You don't see that in Switzerland and much less up North than in the South. Enforcing the litter laws would help. The pediatric office serving Medicaid patients littered the parking lot with dirty diapers. Putting them on the car roofs did have some success.

What do cigarette butts and flossers tossed on the ground have in common?

Assholes.

In both cases, the litterbugs who flung the detritus on the ground and not the trash are utter assholes.

Around here it seems that flossers have replaced dip for the Rexall Rangers.

I have never seen used floss on the ground. My guess is a local lack of dental hygiene or lack of teeth.

Hey, at least people don’t go around spitting on the sidewalk. Somehow we were successful in that, unlike, say Russia or China. Great way to pass TB.

Yes, they are aholes, and I know a few of them. I call them out every time I see them throw 1 on the ground. So crude.

Floss companies, take note: make these fucking disposable stick things biodegradable, like the straws. 1. they’ll get the ONE use they’re meant for, 2. when those jerks throw them down, nature can take care of the rest.
