I'm picking up my friend at the gym. As she exits, she is chatting with another patron and said jokingly, "Are you out of your cotton-picking mind?" I took her to her house and went in for coffee with her husband. Her phone rang, and she turned purple and began cursing. Once she calmed down, we asked her what happened. She said that the manager of the gym had called, and one of their black employees had overheard her using a "racial term" and was offended. Once she calmed down, she cancelled her membership. How far are these idiots going to push?

As far as we let them.

Exactly
Rom 13:4 If you do evil, be afraid. For he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.

I’m just surprised the OP’s friend was able to cancel her membership. I’ve heard it’s damned near impossible to cancel from Planet Fitness.

I had heard that too. At the time that I joined, they drafted membership fees from a checking account, so I opened a separate account and only kept the minimum that Planet Fitness could draw. When I told Planet Fitness that I wanted to cancel membership, I closed the checking account.

Used to be very common in the 40s and 50s, I remember people using the phrase and hearing it on TV in the 60s-70s as well. I've heard it countless times in movies and TV like Leave It To Beaver, I Love Lucy, Hazel, etc., and especially this character-
And has been used in recent times as well, even though nowadays, I'm sure there will be some blowback, depending on region.
