Plowing straight ahead come what may |
…early Sunday morning my hardwired smoke alarm start started going off (it’s 18 feet off the floor and I’m not going to risk climbing up the ladder to rectify the situation…especially after my stroke several years ago)…my Australian Cattle Dog is going nuts and has retreated into my bathroom (at least I have the blessing of earplug’s with Led Zeppelin to cancel the noise…fast forward to this morning…my local electrician scheduled for a visit to disconnect this God Cursed POS…we (both me and the ACD have not had a relaxing day since Sunday…she is snoring on the left side of the bed while I’m succumbing to a bunch of Bourbon to erase this fiasco from my mind…Just a thought…keep all smoke detectors within reach! …$298 later we can at least get some sleep…cheap at twice the price! ******************************************************** "we've gotta roll with the punches, learn to play all of our hunches Making the best of what ever comes our way Forget that blind ambition and learn to trust your intuition Plowing straight ahead come what may And theres a cowboy in the jungle" Jimmy Buffet

4 days of that crap!?! If a ladder or long stick wasn't a viable solution, I'd have ended that thing with a .22 short about 30 minutes after it started!

^^^^^^ That was my first thought, too. _________________________________________________________________________ “A man’s treatment of a dog is no indication of the man’s nature, but his treatment of a cat is. It is the crucial test. None but the humane treat a cat well.” -- Mark Twain, 1902

That sucks! You don’t have any helpful neighbors? I would have come over if I wasn’t a good 20 hour drive away. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. Mine are all hard wired. I think they have a capacitor that will allow them to operate for a time if the power quits. Every once in a while, I set up my shop vac and blow the dust off them. An accumulation of dust can set them off. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

Just went through this last year, sort of. One of mine kept going off even with new batteries. I learned that Smoke Detectors do expire, usually about a 10-year life span. Then they need to be replaced. Same with CO2 detectors. They don't last quite as long as smoke detectors. I had to get them all replaced including the CO2 detector. and got new additional CO2 detector installed. .

Don't ever be afraid to ask the fire department for help either. We've gone out for unknown alarms and helped disconnect nuisance detectors before.

Eye on the Silver Lining |
I had one dog that completely flipped when that alarm went off- I was out, my husband had made a batch of popcorn that burned and when the alarm went off she completely slipped her leash mentally - every time after that when it went low on battery, whatever, she would freak out whenever she heard it beep. Not ok. Hope you and your pup are OK __________________________ "Trust, but verify."

I shoot a lot of 410, use it for Skeet practice. So I have two 410 presses in my basement. In that situation a light load of H110 with a balsa wood "wad" would have put "Paid" to that detector with no harm to the ceiling. BTW, I also keep Balsa wood on hand, it's fantastic for sanding blocks when refinishing a dinged up stock. BTW, this also proves that the 410 is actually a very useful "Caliber" and everyone should have at least one 410 shotgun. I've stopped counting.

Yeah, Four days and 18 feet is quite the climb up and a good ways to go... Err. Um, yeah, to be consistent, I have a Desert Eagle if you really wanted to turn it off. Shooting it twice would be silly.

Serious note, you should be aware that ionization smoke detectors contain a small amount of the man-made radioactive material Americium-241.
