I thought covid prices were over? Are we now in "tariff pricing"?

It said "contact us for a quote" so I enquired about a new car (Civic Si) that was on their website priced at $31,855 which is full list price including destination. I figured they'd reply with a price below msrp but they'd tack on enough in fees to get it back up.

When "my quote" came back they added $3,000 on top of retail for a start, so $34,855. Then another $950 of additional mark up in the form of fees. The follow up text confided they didn't even have the car but with a deposit it would be allocated to me and they'll call when it arrived. I thanked them for the quote and just said I'm not interested. I may try another dealer but assuming others are quoting similar prices on this vehicle the Civic will be checked off my list.

Try going through Honda corporate site, it may have a locater on it and and inquiry spot. The dealers and Honda will take that more seriously

You may also find out if it's a hot/hard to come by item

That’s better than the deal I got quoted on a Civic SI: $40k out the door. Sales tax here is 6%.

The Honda dealer is also a VW dealer which had a few new and used GTIs and GLIs, but I laughed all the way to SC and bought a 2023 GLI Autobahn with under 7,000 miles for just under $27k out the door.

The dealer locator on Honda's site is where I found the dealer in question.

I just checked another dealer and the salesman said they generally add $3,000 extra mark-up too "but if you want to make an offer I'll present it to my manager." So this must be common practice now on this model. It might be a good $31,000 car but in my mind it's not a $35,000 automobile.

How do you like your GLI so far? Any issues so far?
Maybe I should consider one since it's about the same cost as the civic after dealer mark up. Unfortunately this one is black which makes it a no go for me.

The stealerships are all using "TARIFFS!" to jack up prices even though there are no new tariffs and most of the countries involved here have already made deals. Roll Eyes

Just typical scumbag new car dealership behavior, nothing has changed.

Neither brought up tariffs but I was just wondering if tariff is the new covid meaning demand has increased and supply has not, making an "opportunity" for dealers to further inflate their already inflated prices? Whatever, it doesn't matter to me because I'll simply hold off buying.

The Beats Audio radio sounds horrible and is not easily fixed; otherwise, I really like the car. It’s my son’s for driving back and forth to college, but I find reasons to drive it when he’s home.

After we picked it up, my son and I immediately took it to the Moonshine 28 and did the Tail of the Dragon the next morning: https://sigforum.com/eve/forum...601935/m/7430094115/. Pictures on page 3.

I don't care much about a radio because I seldom have it on.
That's a nice looking GLI!

You’ll have to do what some of us have done for decades. Hunt down the best deal nationwide, and either have the fucker shipped or buy a plane ticket and drive it back. I had to do that on my last vehicle bought in 2023. Took a puddle jumper. Salesman picked me up at the Rudy poo airport. Signed. Then took it to a tint shop to have track armor put on the entire front end (temp PPF) and drove it home. It was a performance variant, special edition with only 1500 made, and I wanted a particular color so 500 in the country. Scumbag dealers were selling them for $10k-20k over MSRP and fuck that. I paid MSRP + TTL in my state when I got it home. PITA but better than being robbed.

I've gone out of state three times now and saved between $6k and $15k each time including plane tickets and hotel rooms. Plus, each trip I took one of my sons and returned with a story.

We had one hitch this last time. I brought a personal check to pay for the car and the dealership's system for verifying the check was down. I called my bank to ask about the cutoff for a wire transfer and they said they could temporarily bump the limit on my debit card, so I did that and paid $26k using my debit card.

Yeah I don't mind doing a fly and drive, or drive, trade mine in, and drive back. On a trade, WV taxes only the difference so trading could make sense. If not I don't mind dealing with Facebook Marketplace tire kickers, I'm retired! Smile

It's a pretty nice, low mileage Corolla so it'll make a good car for someone.

Never heard of ubsi, maybe I'll give them a try if I can't get anywhere with some of these dealers. Thanks 41.

In 2021 I found a Dodge dealer in KY (I'm in CA) willing to sell a Hellcat for 6% under dealer invoice.

Sent the salesman my options, he sent back the price to include noting the processing fee entailed them registering it in CA (with all applicable taxes). Nothing unreasonable or out of line.

On a whim, I went to a local Dodge dealer, spoke with the internet sales girl then the sales manager. He offered 4% under dealer invoice and the 7 yr, 70K mile Platinum warranty at his cost.

Deal done and vehicle built with my options delivered 4.5 months later.

The 2% difference of invoice costs was negated by the one way ticket and hotel rooms' costs for the trip.

I was happy and the internet sales girl was happy. Sales manager was not impressed when I paid cash and they couldn't make up the difference in financing but overall, he treats me nice whenever I go in there since getting the car.

Sales girl - she moved to a local Mercedes dealership and is the top sales person there

I've learned long ago not to play their fucking game. Just browse their online inventory, want it, see their posted OTD price, print it and bring it to dealer. After all the inspection and test drive are done, if I like it, "Let's do the paperwork". If they attempt to tag on anything else, I would pull out the printout. If they don't honor it, then AMF. They need my money. I don't need their car.

I guess I need to find a dealer that posts their selling prices. Most post msrp and say "contact us for your quote".

Or try lightly used. My experience with my last round of car shopping in 2022 is that most dealerships will post the price for used cars, whereas new cars will have a generic MSRP and "contact for quote".

A car with a few thousand miles on it is still practically new, with almost its entire warranty still on it. (Plus potentially a further extended warranty included if its a Certified Pre-Owned.)

And in addition to it being easier to find an actual price, the price will often be noticeably less than brand new. So let someone else take the initial depreciation hit. Then you can scoop it up with 3k/5k/8k miles for a nice discount, while it still has a bit of that "new car smell".

I’ve told people this for decades and they still don’t listen. They are always in the I have to have it now!!!!! Mindset. It’s all fucking business to me until it’s bought for a good price and home. You can jerk off on it once you get it home. Until then it’s straight business and the consumer should be a hard ass. You know why it’s so fucking hard to get a new vehicle at a decent price these days? Because most consumers are absolute dipshits. They get suckered into extended warranties, service contracts, wheel and tire packages, paying the stealer for their shitty tint, OEM wheel locks, etc, etc, etc.

In searching the used Civic Si's the late model low mileage ones, such as 2022-23 w/10-20,000 miles are almost $30K which is approaching 2025 msrp new. IMO the high resale these cars command means buying new might be the better option.

Prefontaine yeah I know that. Many car buyers, once they've made up their mind what they want and go shopping, have become emotional to the car and are at the mercy of dealers who lull them in then further ratchet up the price with doc fees, financing, service contracts, etc.
