Ok, with the exception of my Afib, apparently I have not been sick with a cold or flu in quite some time. Last week, I felt what I perceived to be a cold coming on. No problem, I have some Daquil and Nyquil, along with some other cold and flu medicines in our medicine chest. I started checking the expiration dates. WTF? Everything I had expired in 2020 or 2021, which means the last time I bought cold and flu meds must have been in 2019 or so. Have you checked the expiration dates on the meds in your house lately? A year or two out with that doesn’t bother me. Yesterday I cooked some pasta, expired Nov 2022, still here. That’s me anyway. | |||

A couple of years expired really means nothing. But, I would be more concerned with you taking the otc cold meds that night contain either phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine, due to your heart issue, Steve. Check with your cardiologist or PCP, first. Q | |||

I worked in a pharmacy in high school and college. As stated above, the worst thing that happens to most drugs is they might lose a little potency. One thing that does tend to get old though is aspirin. If it starts breaking down a little and smelling vinegary, toss it. | |||

As far as out of date products in your medicine cabinet especially the over the counter products as well as the kitchen pantry did you check the " best used by date" while still in store prior to purchase...... You might be supprised to find out of date products on the shelf waiting to be sold.. They could have been out of date prior to you purchasing them.............................. ...... drill sgt. | |||

From a study referenced on health.harvard.edu: Most of what is known about drug expiration dates comes from a study conducted by the Food and Drug Administration at the request of the military. With a large and expensive stockpile of drugs, the military faced tossing out and replacing its drugs every few years. What they found from the study is 90% of more than 100 drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, were perfectly good to use even 15 years after the expiration date. | |||

Back quite a few years ago, the military did some testing on meds. This was due to the strategic stockpile that our country maintains. According to the testing, 10 years is nothing in regards to past expiration dates. It was noted some meds lose their potency, but not enough to be concerned.

I have some Black Ointment dated 1957 and it will still pull splinters out. Tar Based!!!!! LOL. | |||
