I did the same, plus new valve cover gaskets, in our 2004 Sienna a few months back. It's just like your Camry, except less room. And, as mentioned above, you need to remove the wipers, wiper motor, etc.

If you don't pull the engine, send it in to a lab that disassembles and does a complete post mortem, including both NDI and DPA/DMT evaluation, you cannot expect to know if anything you do is or is not wasting time and money.
