I do this more and more now
Me too. When backing into a space, it's highly unlikely that you're gonna hit cross traffic, and when leaving, it's so much easier to see cross traffic in front of you, than it is if you're backing out.

Same here. Unless I find a pull through spot, I back my truck in. It makes it much safer when leaving.

StorminNorman, I feel for you.

I bet that cretin in the crappy flatbed most likely has one of those big hitches on the back, the ones that I call Knee-Knockers.

Have you seen the new parking violations things that suction clamp down on the windshield. They seal tight and block the drivers forward view. Too many cameras nowadays, but I can still dream.

BMW's are expensive but apparently, they do not come with Turn Signals (blinkers). It's rare I see a BMW driver use turn signals. Asshats!

I'd be tempted to get out of my parking space, from next to that cretin. I'd park right behind him so he can't get out then start changing my "flat tire" taking my old sweet ass time and when cretin comes up and wants to leave, and I'm old and slow, and make him wait to AAA finishes the job, because my "spare tire" is flat.

Maybe the cretin would be kind enough to "help me" change the tire, then find out it's flat. AAA on the way, my car is on the jack, chill out dude, be nice to us old folks.

Us old folks have lived a long time and learned how things work and how to get things taken care of.

For what it’s worth, I leave my knee-knocker out there all the time… minus the flatbed, of course.

Key difference: my entire vehicle (including the knee-knocker) fits within a standard parking space, and I make sure to fairly-well center it.

I bonk my knee on it occasionally, and I just have to grin and bear it. That’s a result of my own inattention or clumsiness. But if someone else bonks theirs on it, I figure they were a) walking too close, or b) not paying attention.

That said, I will also add that I’m aware enough of the potential for a knocking that I’ll usually (whenever possible) back into a space that’s not connected to another (i.e., around the border of the parking lot) so as to reduce the chance of someone getting a knee knocked. I’m a jerk sometimes, but not a cretin. Smile

You people are lame! I can back a 53 foot trailer into a spot you couldn't back your F-150 with a tiny trailer into. Razz
This is sarcasm of course! Wink

I used to think that I was a pretty good @ backing up a dually pickup and 28' jobsite trailer, after 30 some years of dragging it around.
That was until I backed in the drive way with my Tundra one night, broke the mirror on my wife's Buick and broke the Tundra tailight!
A very humbling and expensive wake up call! Wink

A wonder of wonders: I went to dim sum yesterday and watched a lady park at an angle in straight spot.

She got out and then noticed she wasn't straight and was close to the neighboring car. She got back in and re-parked, straightening out her car and centering into the spot.

An unusual sight to be sure.

I find myself either at a bit of an angle or not centered in a spot somewhat frequently. I like to blame the very rounded corners of vehicles these days for not knowing exactly where a corner is. I hope it isn't old age!

My car has the same problem. I don't for a moment consider trying to parallel-park it. In addition, an intersection I frequently use is a narrow-angled "Y", with the side street I'm leaving and the main street I want to pull onto forming the "sharp" end. The "B-pillar" completely blocks my view, forcing me to lean back in the seat and turn my head like the character in The Exorcist movie to see. This doesn't get any easier with age. The large "A-pillars" are problematic sometimes as well.

It seems that many new cars have rear facing cameras that facilitate parking. This makes sense in Japanese cars since most people in Japan back into a parking space (at home, out in public, etc).

Here as well but not as prevalent.

For here, why not have a forward facing camera - seems like a lot of people could benefit from it. AI could detect you're going to park and flash up and lines and images overlayed on the spot.

I don't need it for forward or rear parking. But people watching near parking lots - many people do. Incompetence and/or Inconsideration is ubiquitous.

And don't get started on the ones that pull in too much (sidewalk overhang and/or violating the space of a facing parking spot in the next aisle). Such a simple, everyday task and yet....

Huh. Didn't know that. Prefer not to have a display in the car - expensive thing to replace for something I don't really want. It's one of the things I'm wary about in a used car.

The RDU area of NC is infested with Indians and Arab Muslims. When I drop my kids off at school I feel like the ambassador to India.
Point is, “these people” ( there, I said it) are the worst drivers I have seen. Most are women who got battlefield promotions and the necessary driver’s licenses to engage in Western civilization.
They go 10 MPH under the speed limit. They sit paralyzed at orange blinking left turn lights. They back out of strip mall parking places without looking, as the $3000 fender damage one caused me proved. They are thoroughly and utterly incompetent.
Yet most drive Teslas.

I felt much the same way until we got a car with a rear facing camera.

It becomes even more useful as when you have back issue which make turning around at the waist difficult. Cross traffic warnings when backing up can be irritating, but does a good job of warning when kids run behind your car. The cameras give a wider view of the area behind you than is available looking through your rear windows.

While I haven't yet figured out backing up using the lines for alignment...I still use my mirrors...the distance lines are much more accurate and very helpful

Yep, I have been backing into parking spots for decades, it is not a "new" thing Roll Eyes. My wife and I back into the garage, and I back my third vehicle onto the driveway. If people have a problem with this, they are wound way too tightly.

I dont care if people back into a spot unless the damn trailer hitch extends over the sidewalk. That has happened at my office and the guy in the wheelchair could not get on the sidewalk. Plus if you are not paying attention you walk into it and it hurts like hell.

I think some people are born with parking skills. Not me. My father could parallel park a 60s extended Ford station wagon with manual steering in downtown Chicago with inches to spare on either side. It was in heavy traffic and was raining.

Waiting at the Social Security bldg. this morning.
It appears that parking skills are not ! A requirement
For obtaining s.s. benefits.

Of the 16 cars in the lot , four of
them are taking up two parking spaces.

Yes, around here it seems like when you see a Tesla driver, 9 times out of 10 it's an Indian. They are wildly popular with them for some reason. And yes they can't drive for shit, always way under the speed limit to the point they are holding up the flow of traffic and making themselves a danger. I try to get away from any Tesla I see on the road.

Are they also festooned with those yellow "New Driver" or "Please Be Patient" stickers too like they are in the Philly area?
