I remember when I was a kid, his picture was in the newspapers frequently. I always recognized him by his eyebrows.

Buy a sturdy cane, or two. Cane #1 kept in the house, otherwise you’ll be “furniture surfing” for handholds. Cane #2 kept in the car for when you are out and about in public.

Believe me, as you get older (I’m 75) you’ll start to feel less secure walking unaided. This is especially true if you have arthritis in hips and knees.

The Riddle of the Sphinx is so true: “What walks on four legs in the Morning, two legs in the Afternoon, and three legs in the Evening?” — Man!

How about remembering things that didn’t happen?

I swear there’s a line in the movie Fargo, but I just went through the whole thing and didn’t find it.

The line that’s not in the movie:

Looks like we gotta nutter dead body der Marge.

Memory begins a slow decline in your forties and fifties. The clinical term is confabulation for recalling things that never happened.
A number of people went to prison for molesting children in a day care. The preschool kid regaled the social workers with tales of satanic rituals. It turns out NONE of it was true.
It was the McMartin day care case for point of reference.

Did you watch it on TV or YouTube? Maybe the line was cut out.

I've never seen it, so I can't help. Or, at least I don't remember seeing it. I'm 77 so I guess I can't be sure...

Well, in a few months I'll be 79. And yeah, all of your worries are pretty much true. Well, except for an earlier post here that claimed your skin thickens as you age. I have found that my skin gets thinner every year. Just a slight scrape and I'm bleeding. If you bump your hands or arms expect a big black mark in about a day or so. They take forever to go away.

On a positive note, I can still pretty much do everything here around the farm that I used to do when younger. It just takes me a lot longer. I can still climb up into my tree stands during hunting season and still do all the mowing, leaf blowing and changing out the oil on all of vehicles and tractor, and I can still fall a few trees, buck them up and split and stack our firewood.

Actually, I feel pretty blessed.

Is this something I just need to accept and deal with?

1. Hair growing on and out of my ears. All of a sudden I have crazy wild hairs growing out of my ears in all places, on them, in them? What the hell?

2. Random cuts and bruises on my hands and arms I DON'T RECALL getting. Is this another old man thing?

What else can I expect? Yikes!

Yes just accept it.

I can't believe all the 50 year olds on this thread, even 60s, You have not lived until you hit your 70s. Hip and shoulder, no more surfing... Heart and lungs, no more walking for miles while hunting, carpal tunnel is a real joy-no more lots of things... I don't have a doctors appointment for two to three weeks, I feel like I'm on vacation... Bruises or hair growing or falling out...kids stuff...

I was pretty much bullet proof til 70 people still think I'm late 50s to 60s by appearance but I now know how old I really am..

60

Developing false memories is hardly limited to old people, and I would say that old people are not more susceptible to that than other ages except for the fact that we’ve lived longer lives to have false memories about.

The McMartin travesty was clearly due to how the children were conditioned by their controllers who may have themselves believed the stories they invented and then got the children to believe as well. This is what the AI Copilot had to say about one question regarding the case:

“Many of the interviews at Children’s Institute International (CII) involved highly leading, repetitive, and coercive questions—a practice known to increase the likelihood of false or constructed memories in young children.”

I myself clearly remember watching a show about supposed racism in which a five- or six-year-old (apparently) Hispanic girl was asked, “Has anyone ever been mean to you because you’re brown?” A slow, hesitant nod, then, “Uh, huh.” Yes, I’m sure they were mean to her for that reason, and none other. Roll Eyes
What we can probably be sure of is that everything bad that happened to that child for the rest of her life was because she was “brown.”

There are strong evolutionary advantages for young children to accept what elders tell them. “Don’t eat that mushroom,” is a very good thing to believe, and the ones who ignore such admonitions don’t pass on their genes because they never reach puberty. As a Jesuit supposedly said, “Give me the child for seven years and I’ll give you the man.”

Once anyone has told an invented or originally misremembered story enough, there is a strong tendency for them to believe it as something that actually happened. I can think of at least one incident in which I was originally told that a third person did something, but later the story was that I did it. That was from a smart person in their twenties.

Another time I was involved in a law enforcement operation with several other military police and CID agents. During an after action discussion one investigator pointed out that even a group of professionals didn’t all agree on certain points: what happened, when, by who, etc. Much later in my 40s I read an old case file about a murder investigation and had to admit to myself that my memory had played me false about certain facts. And that was a case report I had written myself.

Misremembering is a common human failing at all ages.

Edit: Read this several times without noticing I left out an important word.

Collagen!
You can buy tasteless collagen at Costco cheap and that helps keep the skin elastic, durable - whatever you want to call it.

When my grandmother was in her late 90s she turned to me one day and said, “Getting old is Hell!” She lived quite healthy except for a walker, and then she had a stroke and was gone in a week -short of her 102nd birthday.

Bruising could be nothing or it could be serious. A close friend’s bruising led to a diagnosis of chronic CKD stage 4.

The “old man” issue that bothers me the most is having to explain that age has limited my ability to do certain things. I still regret that when I was asked to attend a Glock armorer course I had to point out that I can barely manage to remove the slide of the guns, much less keep up with people a third my age in further disassembly and handling small parts. It’s okay if it takes me 20 minutes to install a P320 trigger at home, but not if others are waiting for me to catch up in a classroom. And then there’s not even being able to hear the instruction.

I can spend four hours in the cold including moderate physical activity, handling heavy steel targets, etc., but I need at least the following day to recuperate, and don’t like admitting that to other people. “You’re doing well for someone your age,” is not a compliment.

Rock on, sir!! Cool

Occasionally, I spend some time helping The Lovely Girlfriend's dad with projects around his place. He'll work my @$$ off for about 15-20 minutes, then he'll sit and rest for a bit, "coaching" me on what to do next. On my last work visit there he proclaimed, "If I had the energy I had when I was 80, I'd be in good shape!" Big Grin
