We’ve been very pleased with our alarm service but I’ve wanted to add a couple of cameras. They tell me they offer a discount for renewal customers provided we agree to service for another 5 years.
The math is crazy- They offer a $250 discount on the equipment. I asked if there is a cancellation fee if we cancel in the 5 year period. Yep, it’s computed as the number of months remaining in the period multiplied by $35 x 90%. So if I had to cancel the contract the month after I signed it I would have to pay them over 1800.
I told them that’s nuts. Forget the discount. The risk is too high that we might want to move to an area where they don’t provide service.

NCA Alarms in Nashville does not require a contract. They installed over my wired system for a very reasonable cost. Maybe you can find a similar company in Raleigh. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Anush,

Thanks Anush -
To clarify, I was not required to do an extension on the contract unless I accepted the $250 discount on the new equipment that I wanted to add. The cancellation fee is disproportionate.
On the original contract - like 7 years ago - the discount was more significant and we had no intention of moving. That made it more reasonable to agree to a termination amount.
