Concussions! Update Bottom of Page 2
Strongly recommend you get a neuro consult.

Here's our update:

We went to the GP, he did tests etc and pretty much said "weird." in dr. speak. He is a GP after all. He made us an appt with a neurologist and told us that he can't go back to school until he's walking normally.

Jump to today:
This morning, no change in his gate. Still at about 60% of normal.

At about 1:50pm I'm on the phone with the "Concussion nurse" talking about his rehab plan when my son walks into my office with a huge smile on his face- He's walking at about 80%!! After my call, I go downstairs and we are talking and he starts crying he's so happy. So, of course, I do too.

But it gets better!

About 30mins ago he comes into my office and I said "Hey, you're not limping" and the look of shock on his face when he realized we wasn't limping was so cool.

He's probably at 90-95% now. You can't tell he has a limp, he's just walking slowly.

Lots of relief around this house I can tell you that.

But we still have to stick with the plan and that's bugging him but he knows it's the right thing to do.

So now we have to decide if the neurologist is worth it. I mean, the boy's walking normal, has a normal CT, and no other signs of concussion. What's the man to do?

Thanks for all the ideas and support, I appreciate it!

Good news! Still go to neurologist, brain injuries are weird, if nothing else just to get piece of mind.

Glad to hear he's improving. But, I would still plan to see the neurologist. Head injuries are nothing to mess with. My daughter is an Athletic Trainer with a major University - her drill with the football players was to confiscate their helmet so that they could not go back on the field no matter how good they felt.

See the Doc, please!

That's awesome.

See the Neurologist.

If he says everything is OK then you have piece of mind and will not wonder if you should have gone.

Compare the cost of a neuro consult against the cost of caring for a person with an undiagnosed traumatic brain injury.

Then take him for a neuro consult.

It's GREAT that your son is much improved but as others have said, follow up with a neuro doc.

After my TBI my health steadily deteriorated over a period of about 3 years. This was after feeling perfectly normal for the first few weeks.

See the neurologist.

Update: We went and saw a concussion specialist, a very good one: Dr. Mat Pombo. He was pleased with my son's progress and made some adjustments to the plan we received from CHOA. He did mention that the way my son presented his concussion is uncommon in children but certainly not unheard of. He said that it presented that way as a symptom to what his brain was feeling and reacting to. So in other words it wasn't a physical or brain injury but a response to the concussion. In layman's terms, his noodle was scrambled. Relief.

The doctor is going to see my son again in a week and a half and if my son has no issues, he will put him on a sports-concussion rehab schedule to get him back on the field in about 3 weeks.

Thanks for all the support!
