Luck is indeed a big part of it.

As to "knack", it's like it was what I was born to do. At 7 or 8 years old, I'd grab a screwdriver and go around the kitchen tightening all the cabinet handles and hinges.

I'd also disassemble anything I could get my hands on and sometimes even re-assemble it and make it work...

90% of my work life had to do with repair and maintenance. Electronics, mechanical, computers, buildings and grounds, etc. When circumstances occasionally forced me to take a job in retail, I hated every minute of it.
