ridewvLOL hand held means "high priced sandwich".
No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

h2oysI wasn't sure if I should open this thread due to the one-word title. Let alone given the one word title of "hand-held" and any possible pics thereof.

PASigIt’s the new frou-frou menuspeak
It used to be cute at the places where it made sense but now everyone’s doing it.
The other one that makes me crazy is “shareables”

Just call them appetizers like we have done for a million years

PerceptionWhen I see handheld, house made, or a few others on a menu it tells me I'm about to overpay for food I can get down the street that's both better and cheaper. It's not always true, but it's a leading indicator. It tells me they put an emphasis on style, and for many establishments that comes at the cost of substance.
"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in." February 13, 2026, 09:03 AM
2BobTannerOn one of the food contest shows, the contestants were to make “street food” items. OK, to me that means something you can eat while walking around, napkins aplenty.
So, what did 2 of the 3 contestants make; something that had to be eaten with a knife a fork while seated. The 3 pro contestant made a hand-held sandwich. Guess who won the contest; hand-held, as the judges said the others weren’t street food, regardless of how good it tasted.

I too was intrigued by the title. I love shrimp any way and can eat a bunch of them. Coconut shrimp are good, but I can only eat a few due to the sweetness. I love beans!! We can still be friends!

tsmccullNothing wrong with coconut shrimp. Use some mango-habanero pepper relish as dip to cut the sweetness and a dozen go down quickly and taste good!

PASigAnother trend that started off well but has gotten a bit out of hand are these tiny 1-page menus.
We get that you want to be all crafty and local but I went to a place where they handed me a menu and literally HALF of it was drinks and the other half was the food and they had only like 5 entrees.
Yes, having a 5 page menu is bad too but this is getting a little out of hand. And no it was not some special limited menu, that's just how they roll. 5 entrees, 5 sandwiches and 5 apps

oddballOne of my favorite restaurants near my house, and admittedly pricier, has a category on their menu labeled "handhelds". This menu group includes burgers, sandwiches, and lettuce wraps.

Rey HRHhandheld??? wtf. if it's a greasy or runny sandwich, I'm not holding it. I even use a knife and fork and eating a candy bar as any civilized person would.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." ThomasconnorHandhelds, shareables... I'm still trying to figure who came up with "reach out"
Whenever I hear "reach out" I usually say it would probably be a lot easier to call.

BurtonRWI was in a cafeteria-style eating place a number of years ago. Overheard a mother asking her maybe kindergarten aged child whether he wanted a “hand fruit”. What she meant was a whole piece of fruit vs. a fruit cup or mashed fruit in a tube, I suppose, but “hand fruit”? WTF.
Then I saw the basket of apples, oranges, and bananas… labeled “hand fruit”.
I felt dumber for being exposed to that.

That one really bugs me, too.
One of these days, I'm going to get caught mocking the people around me who say it.
