Might’ve been reasonable when gas was 12¢ per gallon, but not now. I generally oppose government interference in the market, but would welcome a federal law requiring gas to be priced at 1¢ resolution for new pumps and new gas price signs. Would be a nice simplification, universally appreciated by consumers.

I can’t see why it would matter one way or the other. It’s always rounded to a penny for the total price, so what difference does it make? Seems more like a marketing gimmick than an issue.

Amoco: OK, we'll price at 1 cents resolution, if you all will. You go first.

Chevron: NO, you go first.

BP: Y'all go first.

Although it makes absolutely no sense today, I always assumed it was a marketing thing, not something that was mandated by the government. And the fact is that it works with many people. I have heard countless references to something like $29.95 as “It costs twenty dollars,” or $599 as “It’s about five hundred.”

I agree that it's marketing, but at least in your example one can pay the advertised price because it is advertised in US currency.

1/10 cents do not exist. How can one pay a fractional cent for a product when it's not a measure of currency? How would a bank handle a check written out for 9/10th of a cent?

The last fractional cent was the half cent, last minted in 1857.

Look, they do it to deceive you. While we all know what they're doing, we still go to those places. The government is too involved in our lives as it is. We have politically correct people who would find a way to sue the rich oil companies, never looking at the taxes that get a much bigger slice of the price. Won't be long before they'll just leave off the cents and rounding it to the nearest dime. Or dollar.

Look at your electric bill. Electric is priced by the kilowatt. The price is carried out 3 or 4 decimal points though you're always billed to the penny. Wonder which way that's rounded off?

OK, I fill up once a week. Let's say every time I fill up I go 1/10 of a cent over and the gas company rounds it up so they overcharge me by 9/10 of a cent. That translates into an excess charge of 46.8 cents a year. OK, bilked again, 47 cents a year. I am 64 and have been driving for 48 years. In the course of my driving history the most I could have been bilked for is $22.56. I will not be losing sleep over this one.

Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

Let the Democrats propose this for new Federal law and waste time. It might distract them from any anti-gun BS.

That is the cost of a couple boxes of range ammunition, or a small box of carry-quality ammunition.

That is a serious amount of money! Wink

I make it up at the local station's diesel pump. It has a cut off of $85.00 when using a card. Unlike all of the other pumps that slow down to a penny a second the last dollar, this pump runs full bore until $85 then kicks off.

Total on the pump is usually $85.15-$85.20. Amount billed to card $85.00.
