Yesterday a guy riding a motorcycle stopped next to me at a stoplight. Of course I glance over to see what he's riding and he's wearing flimsy open toed sandals. I've never seen that kind of stupid before. I wear sandals a lot but I would never ride with them. When I had a bike I never wore anything but some sort of boot. Oh well, to each his own but I foresee a painful lesson for this guy in the future.

The only thing worse than the open toed sandals is to see someone wearing flip flops while riding motorcycles. Be they big cruisers with floor
boards or crotch rockets. What about riding in tank top shirts and short pants?? Guess they think that nothing is going to happen to them and or have massive medical insurance coverage. ............................. drill sgt.

Have gone around the block in shorts & sandals, but would never go further.

I have a GSXR750

My entire time in Hawaii I never rode without long pants and boots. I did however skimp on the jacket sometimes.

Always wore a helmet though.

Actually, I have pressed my clear visor open face helmet into service as a WhooHooFloo mask on several occasions.
Works great!
Touch your exhaust with your sandaled tootsies one time and that would end that practice.

I saw this so often in Florida that I got used to it. And, yes, usually accompanied with shorts and a tank top.

Around the block was literal, less than 1/4 mile. And that was plenty for me, not a fun experience.

Its a running joke on a YouTube channel I watch, that its always a GSXR that you see in such attire.

What is the policy for service members when riding off base even when off duty about wearing required saftey gear and if involved in a accident that medical coverage cost are denied and service member is personally responsible for cost?? ............................. drill sgt.

There is no policy in place that I pay medical coverage costs if involved in an accident.

The motorcycle safety course and sometimes sport bike course are a requirement prior to any operation still.

Yeah, and I knew a guy who would not even ride in blue Jeans. He only wore leathers after picking denim out of his hide for months after a laying his down one time.

I will admit to many times wearing leather cross training shoes on my bike, lot of foot pain due to almost a half century of concrete floors.

But the sandals thing, NEVER. One night I rode to downtown Royal Oak for bike night, met up with a couple of friends from work. Cruising down I-696 aka The Autobahn, doing about 60 in the right lane riding my '82 FLH. Typical summer night attire for me, half helmet, shorty gloves, jeans, t-shirt. That night I was wearing my boots (pre foot problems) and this kid on a Sportster passes me, I would judge probably ten or fifteen over the posted 70 limit. Wearing similar attire and a full face helmet.

He exited at the same one I was getting off at, the Woodward Ave./Main Street exit. He was caught at the first light, I pulled up in the adjacent lane and see SANDALS!

While I do know the old adage "Dress for the slide, not the ride" at least he beat me out for the dummy award that night.

It's not even if you lay the bike down...

How many times do small rocks or pebbles kick up, I don't want that crap hitting my feet.

I don't want it hitting my face or forehead.

^^^^^^^^^^ Yes.. If not wearing proper PPE equipment and accident involved. Heard stories that some of the PPE required was a lot more involved as well as saftey courses than standard civilans standards. Had several occasions when entering military bases that we were required to have extra visible saftey vests /boots/gloves. Reason for entering was escort/honor guard with the Patriot Guard Riders. And when doing so flew a 3ft X 5ft US Flag off the rear of bike and it waved proudly. .......................................... drill sgt.

I've never heard of anything like that and I would find it hard to believe they COULD or WOULD deny medical coverage regardless.

You'd most certainly face UCMJ punitive damages after all is said and done. But I don't think they are cancelling your medical coverage because of lack of PPE.

I had a GSX-R750, bought new in 1986. Was not new at all to motorcycles. Been riding stuff since I was 8, but my career ended in 2001 with a very bad wreck that took several years from which to recover. Always wore full gear.

About 1987, drove out to Maine to visit my folks, while they were staying at a nice resort for the summer; they invited.

While on the highway, getting close to the destination, was in a block of traffic moving at very good speed. All of a sudden, noticed a bike coming up very fast, probably 85 to 90 mph. It was a bright yellow Goldwing with no fairing. The rider was wearing, i swear, sunglasses, shorts and flip flops! That's it! No helmet, no shirt, nada. Needless to say, was a bit taken aback.

A nice, big bug or a good sized pebble would have taken Mr. Atlas right off that scooter.

Sheesh. Unforgettable.
